Get ready Texas my good friend is about to let his SS RS or maybe it is RS SS plate go back so it is up for grabs.

Aren't those held by TxDOT for a couple of years, so no one else can get them? I've heard that from a couple of people, but I don't know if it's true or not.

how do you get a custom plate with a space in it? do you have to call dot to see what's available? and does anyone know if there are any plates you can get that are black?

I don't know if you can a space or not. IIRC, the only thing you can add is a little Texas symbol, a dash or a period, and you can have two of them. All that is before Texas went to a seven-character plate, though. The rules may have changed.

For starters here is the link to the Tx Dot site to order personalized plates http://rts.texasonline.state.tx.us/N...d=40&pltid=170

For a cars plate you can have any combination of LETTERS/NUMBERS that are available with UP TO 6 charactors. HOWEVER, on a texas plate there is room for up to 8 spaces on a cars plate, although you can only have 6 charactors SHOWING. Once you use the database that will show you if the plate you want is available, and go to the next step to order them, you are brought to this page where you select the letters/numbers and how you want them to appear on the plate.

Complete the rest of the form, pay for them, and in about 2 weeks they show up at your counties court house. Once your plates arrive from your dealer, do NOT install the plates OR the registration window sticker. Bring the new plates and the sticker with you and they will issue your personelized plates and a new sticker. the additional fee for that was a whopping 10 cents! lol. and YES, you can have spaces in the plate. I went through this all about a week ago.

One thing I forgot to add that I learned a few years ago: The punctuation you can add to the plate does not count toward making the plate unique. "SS-RS" and "SS.RS" are both treated as "SSRS" in the computer, for example.

Not anymore. For a year or two there was a company called myplates.com i think which won a contract from the state to create unique plates, and they had a black one. However they priced themselves out of business and are no longer available.

myplates.com is comming back up but I don't know when. I was told this back in July or August. The website says the same thing.
