Dealer damaged a tire installing a wheel

I got a set of new wheels that were to be installed yesterday at my local dealer. They've done work for me before and have always done a good job. The wheels are a chrome version of the stock ones and are a GM Camaro wheel.

About an hour after I dropped it off they called and said they can't install the wheels and that they blew out a tire trying to get it on the new rim. I don't understand why it would be a problem since they are Chevy rims that have the exact same specs. Anyway, they said they would replace the tire which is a General GMAX AS-03 and put it on the old rim. Said I'd have to go elsewhere to have the new ones put on.

The thing I'm concerned about is having one new tire and three with 9,000 miles on them. I have a good private shop that can put on the new wheels and do a Road Force balance, so that's not a problem, but what about the mileage difference on the tires? Is that something that could be a problem?

It's no different than driving with a donut tire speed limited.
No I think he means he got new rims but is reusing his old tires but now that they blew one out he has 1 new tire and 3 old ones.

You should've told them to replace both.

I haven't picked the car up yet so that is still a possibility. The tires don't have much wear on them so that's why I didn't know if it would be an issue.

Depending on the wear, 9000 miles is hardly 'old'.

It shouldn't be a problem, it's the same as when someone has a blow out on the road & has to replace a tire ... happens all the time. The only issue will be when the other's reach the end of their tread life, the newer one may still have some left. At that point, I would replace it along with the other's and, depending on amount of tread left, maybe hold on to it in case you have a blowout down the road.

Tire and rim packages these days are way different than years ago. Even with a decent machine a tire can split at the bead. They luckily gave you a new tire. At 9000 miles on other tires what are you worried about? They will be fine and if you really want, replace the other, but be prepared to buy it is my guess..

Thanks for the replies. I still don't know if it is a front or rear tire and will find out today. I will be less concerned if it's a rear.

Are your wheels stagered? If not front and rear doesnt matter. You will rotate the tires eventually. 9k miles is nothing.

You'll be fine with the three old tires, but one thing you could do is get another new one and put the new tires on the rear and then rotate after about 5k miles or so

I had a real bad experience getting a custom accessories shop mount the same GMax AS-3, Whoever was trying to mount the tire ruined the sidewall on a brand new tire being mounted on a brand new Foose wheel. Tire Direct replaced the tire for free and I got the owner of the store to mount the replacement new tire.I had the tire pressure sensors replaced, only the new tire & wheel were a problem, probably because the others didn't have to be dismounted entirely to install the TPMS. Obviously the installer was having a bad day, reguardless I'm not going there again .
