I stumbled upon this article from motor trend, it dates back to June 2005 but its a good read. Talks about the history of it, different design considerations, and other things.

Without a doubt it is. Its simply unmatched by any other motor. And when it was retired, the LS series replaced it-the only other motor worthy of doing, IMO
