87 Octane

What is the worst that can happen if the only fuel you can use is 87 Octane? Long term, short term, whatever timeframe.

Worst case scenario you puncture a piston/bend a rod from predetonation and have to rebuild the engine

That's absolute worst case though. Probably what will happen is your engine will retard timing a bunch and you'll lose horsepower

The wife drives the Z a lot and refuses to put premium gas in it. She drives regular and never speeds. When I get in it, I always go straight to the station and top it off with 93. I know that won't help any because it's learned to perform with the lower octane already.

Take the keys and hide them. This is a ZL1, not an AMC Eagle. Feed it Premium!!!

Why would you stand for this? Put the owner's manual in front of her. Have her read the part where the recommended fuel is premium of at least 91 octane with 93 preferred and 87 will make it run like ass. If she still won't comply, jerk the pants off her and put them on yourself and take her keys away. No tang in the world is worth putting up with that.

Just be honest with her, and tell her premium is the recommended fuel. Just be like a politician, and leave out that it will run on 87, but will not get the best performance.

Fuel is cheep now, use the good stuff and enjoy it.

Hell. the difference between 87 and 93 on a tank of gas is the cost of a 20 oz coke and far less than the cup of coffee she probably buys on the way to work. Take the keys from her.

Likely nothing will happen. The ECM will retard the timing sufficiently to prevent detonation, and worse case, you'll end up in limp mode. The engineers who designed and wrote the software for the ECM had to take into account someone putting a lower octane fuel into the car, and running it hard. Sounds more like a marriage counselling issue to me....

Judging by most of the comments, I'm assuming most of you aren't married, or are not happily married. I am happily married and choose not to make big deals out of small things.

I just want to make sure the car can handle the fuel change for a short period of time until she finds the right vehicle for her. I know she puts 87 in the car because I look at the gas receipts and file them. I know what the manual says because I've read it, but like all things, they would never openly advertise that a vehicle can/could run on lower grade material.

Good to know. Can you share some links that support the above? I'd greatly appreciate it.

It is only a small thing until you get into the car and start hammering on it, ending up with a hole in a piston and a $15,000 repair bill. Tell her to put the right fuel in it.
