Cool Thinking about moving to Florida. But where?

Hi everyone,

Before I start, just wanna say i'm praying for you all stuck in hurricane Matthew. I wish you a fast and safe recovery

So I've been thinking recently that I really want to move to inland Florida. I love Scottsdale, but it's too dry out here as well as many other reasons (who loves 110 degree heat?). Long story short, where do you think would be the best city in Florida for me based on the notes below?

1. Hoping to live in a city like Scottsdale. Top notch public safety, low crime, polite communities, nicer areas that doesn't break the bank nearby. I found my 1400sq ft condo for around 215k and I live in a great area.

2. Must be close (within an hour or two) to Disneyworld, because my heart is with the mouse.

3. Hoping for somewhere not known for everything that wants to kill you. In Scottsdale you MUST keep your eyes open for rattlesnakes, javelinas, scorpions, tarantula hawks, etc.

4. Must also be within an hour or two from the beach

5. would be a plus to find somewhere with light traffic, and maybe lower tourism then one would expect. Loop 101 in Arizona gets ridiculous when the snowbirds are here.

I'm mainly looking for a tropical paradise with the added benefits of those things above. I appreciate the advice!

Hmmmmm Florida is pretty big and has all walks of life. You can find small little BFN towns as well as pretty big sized cities. I personally always liked the Fort Pierce area (never lived there). Its on the west coast near Lake O. Not too sure about crime but I know Fort Pierce has areas that are extremely quiet and nothing is around.

Well, you're about to trade 110 degree dry heat for 98 degrees and 90% humidity 9 months out of the year...so...

1. Hoping to live in a city like Scottsdale. Top notch public safety, low crime, polite communities, nicer areas that doesn't break the bank nearby. I found my 1400sq ft condo for around 215k and I live in a great area.

That won't be too hard to find, although every city in Florida has its rough areas. Property is way cheaper here too, my 1300 sq ft waterfront renovated house was $161k. Plus I'll be a state trooper in December so public safety is covered.

2. Must be close (within an hour or two) to Disneyworld, because my heart is with the mouse.

Also not hard to find, but I'll continue this point below...

3. Hoping for somewhere not known for everything that wants to kill you. In Scottsdale you MUST keep your eyes open for rattlesnakes, javelinas, scorpions, tarantula hawks, etc.

Florida is basically the Australia of the United States. We have snakes. We have spiders. We have mosquitoes. We have gators. The mosquitoes you can't really control, but most of the other stuff are really more scared of you than you are of them, unless something's wrong with them (gators or bears who have been fed by people). Then you need to call FWC fast.

4. Must also be within an hour or two from the beach

Also not too hard, I think you're within two hours from a beach almost anywhere in Florida.

5. would be a plus to find somewhere with light traffic, and maybe lower tourism then one would expect. Loop 101 in Arizona gets ridiculous when the snowbirds are here.

This doesn't exist. Unless you move out to super rural areas (which are all getting developed anyways), you're going to have to deal with traffic and tourists. Being within two hours of Disney will make that even worse.

I'm mainly looking for a tropical paradise with the added benefits of those things above. I appreciate the advice!
I'd look along the I-4 corridor, from St. Pete/Tampa up to Daytona. I think you'll be able to find something that suits you there. I've been in Kissimmee for over 3 years now and it's been a pretty good place to live. I'm on the other side of town from Disney so we still get tourists but it's not as bad.

To hell with the Mouse and their outsourcing of American jobs to foreigners.

Estero or Bonita Springs is pretty quiet. Near all of the above and up and coming areas. They get my vote.

I've lived in Florida all my life and wouldn't consider living in another state. I currently reside in Jacksonville and love the area that I live in. I grew up in Tampa and like that area as well. As a native Floridian There are a few places that I would consider moving to: Ormond Beach just North of Daytona Beach, Daytona Beach Shores - South of Daytona Beach and away for the tourist, Lakewood Ranch is in the Sarasota / Bradenton area and is a well planned community, or the Brandon / Valrico area - just East of Tampa. Just remember the further inland that you go the humidity really increases! Best of luck with your decision!

Fort Pierce is on the east cost. We have family in Fort Pierce/Port St. Lucie.

I'd never live in Florida. Crappiest state there is if you like to ride a motorcycle other then a hardly ableson. I like curves and drastic elevation changes. West Virginia was particularly nice if I ever left PA for good. Indiana is particularly flat and boring as well, without the ocean and Disney World. So maybe there are places lower on my list then Florida. Lol

Whoops. I'm an idiot...... East, West. I knew what I meant I got mixed up because I'm on the west coast.

Wow, I honestly wasn't expecting this many responses. Thanks a ton for your input everyone! I'll do my best to respond to everything I got.

Just looked at it. Fort Pierce is beautiful. I think it may be a little too far from where i'd wanna be, but certainly worth a look if I end up heading out there to check out Florida.

You got the job with State PD?? Congratulations man!! I remember we were talking about this (what, last year?) in another thread I posted.

Thank you kindly for the responses to every note I made! Tampa is pretty and so is Daytona. I'm probably gonna have to fly out there and drive all over Florida to check these places out in person. I'll definitely put Kissimme on the list too, just south of Orlando? Looks really close to Disney.

Well, you're about to trade 110 degree dry heat for 98 degrees and 90% humidity 9 months out of the year...so...

I didn't say I hated the heat. I'm usually just annoyed at how warm it is during the nighttime.

That won't be too hard to find, although every city in Florida has its rough areas. Property is way cheaper here too, my 1300 sq ft waterfront renovated house was $161k. Plus I'll be a state trooper in December so public safety is covered.

Oh for sure, I'm not too far from Mesa or Phoenix and there's some pretty bad areas there too. 161k??? That's cheaper than where I live, AND you're on waterfront? Not fair.

Do you have those things everywhere though? (I know Mosquitoes are nasty, but we have'm here too). A scorpion here is like finding a foreign license plate. Gators don't quite scare me. You're allowed to open carry (or at least conceal) there right? Push comes to shove I wont be afraid to stop a gator from doing harm to anyone.

This doesn't exist. Unless you move out to super rural areas (which are all getting developed anyways), you're going to have to deal with traffic and tourists. Being within two hours of Disney will make that even worse.

Anything...ANYTHING has to be better than the garbage I have to deal with here with the snowbirds and retirees unless it's LA of course.

Thanks! They may be a little far from where i'm looking to be but wouldn't be fair if I didn't check it out!

Humidity increases inland??? I didn't know that, so living by the West Coast beach would probably be ideal for me. I've heard good things about Daytona Beach on here so that's worth a look.

Lakewood ranch is so green, I love it. Thanks for the input and kind words!

Where do you live now? I guess it depends on the area of Fl. I don't listen to stereotypes though cause if I did, I'd think the same you do lol.
