HD Radio

Hey Guys. Wanted to know what the story is with HD Radio? I keep hearing commercials for it and wanted to know if anybody has had experience with it, and if we can install it in our cars?

its just normal radio broadcast on a digital signal vs an analog signal, Zune HD have it. its supposed to be clearer and they can transmit more data to your radio easier like song info i believe. alot like the HD tv channels you can get with an antenna

personally i can't tell a difference and a lot of radio stations are not using it yet

Pretty much would have to use a device with a HD radio and plug it into an Aux port. Only thing I really know of right now is the Zune HD.

Yeah that could be fun. I haven't heard a lot about the Zune HD. But maybe its time to upgrade from my 1st Gen iPod Nano

I've got an add-on HD Radio receiver that I need to put in my Camaro. I used it in my truck until I got my Camaro and was just waiting for my XM trial subscription to expire before installing it again.

Most Houston radio stations are dual broadcasting in HD so we have quite a few to pick from. As for sound quality, there is a noticeable difference over standard FM quality, mostly because the hiss and signal drops are gone with the digital stream. It's kind of an all or nothing thing. The use of the HD stream allows stations to offer sub-channels along with their regular programming. Think of a regular new music country station also broadcasting old country + 80's country + George Strait only country at the same time.

didn't realize that hmm that could be cool and be very devastating to satellite radio once this gets up and going

True but satellite still provides a much wider range of programming.

Here's the list of HD stations in Houston...not too much variety, especially compared to XM. But at least it's free every month.

How would you install your HD Radio receiver? Is it like a portable one that you can hook up via the Aux-In port?

Yes, it's a cheap-a$$ unit that I picked up for $5 (after rebate) at Frys. It consists of a main unit (size of a paperback book), a 12" antenna, a 12v power plug with a power supply, and a wired remote display controller. I had to buy the antenna myself and that cost me more than the HD Radio unit did.

I'll probably just stuff all of the parts under the driver's seat and run the 12v power plug and the RCA (to 1/8" plug) wire up between the seat and then under the console. I'll need to drill a hole in the base of the storage area for the wires to come through and then I'll plug in the power plug and plug in the 1/8" plug into the AUX port. I haven't decided where to put the remote display controller but I'm leaning towards just attaching to the side of the console (low down next to the seat to hide it somewhat). I don't really need to see it to auto-tune from station to station and I can easily remember the location of each button on the controller.

Cool man. Maybe if you feel up to it, mind doing a write-up about it whenever you do it? That way I can follow in your footsteps! :-)

You couldn't use the AM/FM window grid antenna to pick up the HD signal? Lets see some pictures.
