LT Headers and muffler resonator delete illegal?

May or may not be a dumb question so here goes. I got kooks headers installed which sound great and I'm really liking it with my straight Pipes, which basically I did a muffler and resonator delete. My friend has said it's illegal to run my set up with a muffler or something like that. So is it illegal to run a muffler and resonator delete in my state? If so what do you guys recommend and see if I could quiet down my Camaro. I live in the western part of Kentucky

The way I would approach this is you can do a google search of the laws in your state pertaining to exhaust modifications. I think its pretty much a given that its generally illegal to modify the exhaust or anything that changes the factory configuration that will change the exhaust emissions. Some states are more liberal in doing emissions testing that others and because you are not checked you get away with it. In WA. Emissions are checked in the big cities but not in the smaller ones. If that changes I will have to come up with a different plan.

There are basically two areas of law. First and foremost is emission. Of course it is against Federal law to remove catalytic converters. Some states may say you cannot replace factory converters at all, while others are only concerned that there is a converter. The method of emission testing varies greatly as well. Kansas does no emission testing nor inspection what-so-ever. Texas leaves the testing requirement up to the individual counties, for example. California will fail the car if the exhaust doesn't smell like lavender and roses. However, you can be fined in any and every state if it is discovered you are running without cats on a car that came from the factory with them.

The other area of law is noise level. Different States, counties, and cities may different decibel tolerances.

As far as I know it is a federal law ,and no long tubes are emissions legal for road use as of yet for your year .

I'm currently running catted Kooks and Solo Mach XL catback. The only muffler I have is the muffled x pipe that came with the solo system. When I went for my emissions test and inspection last year not only did I pass, the guy doing the inspection complimented my headers.

Pre-tune

Post tune

Someone asked for a full blown RPM so in this video I hit the rev limiter on accident.

Use high flow cats for one to get the sound down and check on utube for muffler clips to help you choose, and if you really want it get some cutouts some day.

Here in Oregon we can replace the stock exhaust manifold, and yes have to have cats, and mufflers. I used to drive old Chevys with headers and big pipes through glass packs or cyclonics from Thrush anyway I would use Monza tips at the end to just quiet it down more so cops would not pull me over and go looking under the cars too often.....

Yes muffler delete is not a mod its a delete of a part that's required, now for many its a gamble they wont have to show up in court someday with a 'Fix it" ticket to prove they installed mufflers. Now here up in Portland with the weird they have smog testing and well they are screwed in more ways than one living in their "Bubble of weirdness" .

TITLE 15 MOTOR VEHICLES
CHAPTER 189 TRAFFIC REGULATIONS

189.140 Mufflers -- Noise regulation.
(1) Every motor vehicle with an internal-combustion, steam or air motor shall be equipped with a
suitable and efficient muffler. No person while on a highway shall operate a motor vehicle with the
muffler cut out or removed. No cutout shall be so arranged or connected as to permit its operation or
control by the driver of any motor vehicle while in position for driving.
(2) No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle or an off highway vehicle in a
manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the motor of such vehicle above that
emitted by the muffler originally installed on the vehicle. The original muffler shall comply with all
of the noise requirements of KRS Chapter 224 and regulations promulgated pursuant thereto. No
person shall operate a motor vehicle with an exhaust system so modified.
You may get away with it no problem in your area, or you may not, but its probably best to not make yourself a target.

Resonated x pipe is considered a muffling device.....if you dont have mufflers you need some kind of resonator.

Correct, but part 2, which appears in one form or another in a majority of the state vehicle codes, basically says that it's illegal to modify your car to be louder than it was stock. Now whether that is enforced or not is largely up to the officer and your individual behavior. We aren't too familiar with the law enforcement in that area, but we would imagine driving a straight-piped car with longtubes would put you on the radar.

If you want the sound of mufflers deleted but want to stay in the limits of the law what muffler is similar in sound?

It's illegal to go 56 mph in a 55mph speed zone. It's not enforced but could be. Much like the muffler law. Every other truck on the road here is obnoxiously loud.
