Utter Mod Noob, so bear with me.

I was discussing this last night (w/ another mod noob) and this question came up. Thought I'd take it to the forum.

Are there any performance mods that will NOT void warranty and also not hurt your mileage? Yeah, I know, that kinda sounds like I'm wanting it all, but we were just wondering if they were out there. It would be nice for the extra horsepower to be there if you wanted it, but not have it eating up your mileage the other 90% of the time.

This is pretty much a hypothetical question, though - 400 horsepower is great.

CAI will do both if you don't keep your foot in it.

I'm considering a CAI or Ram Air - when I asked New Era they said they weren't going to provide a Ram Air for the V6- I got this reply from their Sales/Tech Mgr:

"The PCM you have will result in no power gain after 2-3 drive cycles, it relearns airflow and will close the throttle body accordingly to reduce airflow into the engine after an increase is seen. Mike Frumusa, Sales & Tech Manager www.neweraperformanceparts.com sales@neweraperformanceparts.com "

Another member has sent this over to Airaid to see their response and determine if this is the case after several cycles on their dyno... we'll post what we learn... perhaps only a V6 issue.

To be safe, I would say intake and exhaust. Increases can be from 25-50hp in theory with the right products. And they won't affect you're milage too much.

Now, from what I've read on the forced induction pages is that even a supercharger does not immediately void your warranty. As long as its bolt on. It may cause your claim to be denied, but if you can get a shop to prove any damage was not directly caused by the increased boost, then it may still be covered.

Things like cam, tune, head, etc usually will void it since GM doesn't warranty those parts themselves. But then again the manufacturer will warranty their parts. You can even get power train warranties from the supercharger manufacturer.

also, I thought Ram Air had been debunked already... producing such a small tiny amount of gain at over 100mph as to be useless? Ram Air is for ROCKETS and JETS that go a little faster than our cars.

As per above, intake and exhaust are usually pretty safe. If you're concerned about the warranty, then from what I understand you can use GM Performance Parts and have them installed by a dealer. That will cost you more, and probably get you less performance, but you can keep your warranty.

A Cold Air Intake (CAI) and catback exhaust can pick up 15-25 rear wheel horsepower (rwhp) and it won't void your warranty. It may also technically improve your mileage but the problem with mileage is once you have the extra power your right foot seems to start gaining weight for some odd reason.

I had originally planned to keep it stock except for blacking the bowties...but now I'm considering mods. Just considering. *twitch*

So..you're telling me CAI will IMPROVE my mileage, give me more horsepower, and NOT hurt my warranty?

Sweet.

Are there any disadvantages? Right now I can't tell when AFM kicks in - will it increase the noise?

The only disadvantage is you want to use the power once you have it so your mileage MAY go down because you're using the power lol.

And once you feel the power... well... just ask Aby

To go with my CAI, I'll have to grab some black hosiery like Aby's.

Mods come in all stripes, right?
