I'm going to do it ... need advice

I've decided that come spring, my dad, may nephew and I will be pulling my intake and manually cleaning the manifold, runners and valves (and hopefully installing an Elite E2 can) possibly changing the plugs since I'm going to pull them anyway to make turning the engine over easier.

It's already been suggested that I replace the upper and lower intake gaskets since I'll have +/- 50,000 miles on the car.

What I'm asking for is any other tips or suggestions that might make this go smoother or give me better results.

Thanks

My questions would be why go thru all this effort?

What negative engine performance symptoms are you currently experiencing?

If you are so very concerned about PCV oil carryover into the intake, why don't you have a catch can on there now or ASAP? (I do have an elite on mine)

Because I have seen the pictures of engines that have gone without a catch can for fewer miles than mine (I have just under 50K now). As of yet, I haven't been able to afford a (quality) catch can, but I plan on getting one before, or shortly after the cleaning to prevent any build up from happening again.

If you can't afford a quality catch can yet. Just buy some of this and follow the directions on the can. It really works.

Why not try the Moroso Catch Can? About $150 and they've had proven records on multiple platforms for many years. IMHO, I think its nicer looking than most if not all the other catch cans.

I'm afraid of chunks breaking loose and getting into the cylinders and causing damage, but that IS what I intend to use for the manual cleaning, besides if I'm going to clean it, I'm going to do it right.

The Elite seems to be the favored can around here and it's only a few dollars more. My problem is that I have a family of 4 (3 disabled) and I'm the only source of income.
