I've been seduced but she's a screamer
I was walking through a Chevy dealer a couple of weeks ago looking for something a little more luxurious than my 13 year old Galant. Still a nice car but had 157,000 miles on it and the a/c broke ... not a good thing in Florida. I was looking at a pre-owned Lincoln MKZ, Buick Lacrosse and an Impala 2LT (which had everything I wanted and more but at a price.) and then I saw it ... a 2013 pumpkinish colored Camaro and when I looked closer, I noticed it was a 6 cylinder ... really? In a Camaro? Yeah, I get it ... fuel economy and all that but the salesman convinced me to give it a drive. Well I gotta say, with the 6 spd manual, it has plenty of power to do what I want. And, it only had 7100 miles on it; even had new car smell. So, I ended up agonizing for the next week but it's now in my garage.
At any rate, the issue I have is the previous owner did a muffler delete and my neighbors bedroom window is right next to our driveway so when I crank it up at 5:30 in the am, they're not too happy. Unfortunately, we get along or I wouldn't feel bad, but I do, so I'm looking at having some Magnaflow mufflers installed ... not to totally quiet the sound but to mellow it out. For the record, I know I have a 6 and it's not going to sound like my son's 5.0 GT 'stang and I'm okay with that ... I just don't want it to sound like a ricer either. Now, my mechanic quoted me about $1200 for a cat back MBRP setup because he said he couldn't do an axle back due to the welding on the pipes. I stopped by a muffler shop and he said he can install axle back Magnafllows or Flowmasters for about $300 (difference between a good mechanic who doesn't do exhaust systems and a muffler guy). He has done it on quite a few Camaros and hasn't had a complaint so that was a fairly easy decision. So I'm looking at a 14" vs a 18" ... does it really make any difference in the sound/performance? Oh yeah, I've been listening to the MRT 2.0 soundclips and they sounds pretty bad as well ... nice throaty growl. Thanks for your help |

MF x pipe and short body mufflers is an excellent setup. I had the x pipe and muffler delete originally and HATED IT. Obnoxiously loud and way too much drone.
Would definitely recommend my set up. Sounds deeper and meaner than stock but still refined and not obnoxious or excessive except maybe on cold starts and hard acceleration.

There are a ton of threads in this section of the forum about exhaust. Best thing to do is read, read and read some more. If you don't mind drone, then your options are more. If you want less or no noticeable drone, then you have less options. Videos will not give you any idea of how much drone one brand and/or type has over another. When I first bought mine, I thought I'd be ok with the MRT V2 and the amount of drone that people were talking about, but I wasn't. When the windows were open and music on, I was ok with it. But with the windows up and even with music, forget about it. So I removed them and went back to stock. Actually, Friday I'm getting Magnaflow straight through ovals put on and I consulted quite a bit with a local shop before setting up the appointment to let them do it. Since they are not round, they are not supposed to have the drone that most rounds do.

I have short body MF straight through ovals as well. And the MF x pipe. VERY HAPPY AND HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

The ovals are supposed to help stop the drone.

1st of all, thanks for the responses. I've been doing a lot of reading and listening to a lot of sound clips and it can get confusing to read the different reviews. I've owned a 57 Chevy, 56 Nomad, 67 Camaro SS (which, unfortunately did not do good on ice), a 69 Chevelle SS, then to Ford trucks, an MG and finally a couple of Mitsubishi's so I've come full circle. Back in the day, glass packs were the thing and the po-po had less attitude but that's changed. So now, I'm looking for a more refined sound, something that makes a statement without being obnoxious.
The Magnaflow supposedly tones down the higher frequencies at higher rpm's (which is one thing I hate about the muffler delete I have now) to tone down the ricer sound. I had read that the MRT v2 setup also does something similar but perhaps that's just manufacturer hype. MF x pipe (thank you sspade) is definitely something to consider as well; lot of good feedback on that. Then there are the Dynamax who claim to control drone and they sound pretty throaty but no local dealers to confirm that with. I've also heard that the oval MF's help control drone like Silent... and Kenny mentioned so I'm beginning to realize that I'm using this as a sounding board and am probably leaning more towards the MF's but I'll have to get back with the muffler guy for more information. Sometimes I spend too much time analyzing but hopefully I can get mine installed next Monday. Silent...let us know how you like yours. kmarshall2121-not to ignore you but my muffler guy thought they might be a little louder than I'm looking for. dok-if I park the other way then the sound bounces off the garage door ... echo might be even worse. On a side note, has anyone noticed any difference in performance or gas mileage after installing their systems? Thanks again for the comments |

You must do the Magnaflow 11386 resonated X pipe if you want to tame it down a
Bit and get rid of the drone.

Like my MRT 2.0. You could put a resonated x pipe in as well.

I should be able to report back tomorrow evening on the install and results, including the exact part # that is being used. And yes, if this setup has any amount of drone that I don't like, then we can add the MF resonated x-pipe.

I'm interested in this too. Would the resonators on the Solo Performance cats help with the drone on an axle back? I'm weighing a few different options at the moment, stuck between the MRT and the FM.
