0W-20/40 Oil
Has anyone used a 0W-20/40 oil in their car yet? What are the pros-cons.
The Dodge Hellcat spec is 0W-40 thoughts or opinions???

0wXX is going to be the new 5wXX oil, in my opinion.
Much better pour at low temperatures leads to less wear on startup. The BMW dealership I work at has switched over their bulk tank from 5w30 to 0w30.

I use mobil1 0w-40 due to the zddp content but I also uave a high pressure/volume Melling oil pump

0W is too thin for a car like Sledge, that never sees winter, and anything remotely temperatures period.
I do however use, a 0/30 in my daily driven, 4 season car . There was a thread on here a few years back, where there was an oil viscosity debate, and I pointed out how ludicrous the discussion was, because you had one dude from Alaska, one from Africa, one from Arizona, New-York....and they were attempting to recommend a proper viscosity range to each other, .

All things being being equal, and generally speaking, yes.
But just like tire sizes, there are variations to the theme amongst the different manufacturers. Example, the "made in Germany" Castrol 0w/30 (which is btw a group lV oil), has been proven time and time again, to be one of the heaviest 30 weight oils out there, when at normal operating temperature, including when compared to the M1 0W/40. That particular GC 30 weight, acts more like a 40 weight! An other example, Redline 10w/40 group V oil, would act like dino oil 15w/50 and vs even many other group lll 50 weights. A 15w/50 redline group V is thick at temp!! But yeah, generally speaking, apples vs apples, you are correct ![]() Food for thought. |

So with all the above being said how would a 0w-xx work in a daily driver / ocassional track car???

There is enough to worry about, when comparing same cover spec'd, 5W/30's, 10W/30's, etc amongst one an other. Why complicate things even more? 0W/20, its just deviating too far off the spectrum dude. |

GENERALLY, a 0w40 oil vs a 5w40 vs a 10w40 oil should all be the "same" at operating temperature. You'll be fine.

I used to run Mobil-1 0w-40 in my LS2 TBSS for close to 5 years before I sold it. Never an issue and I daily drove that thing in every type of weather and climate you can think of on the east coast.

Ls3 can upgraded with no cats I would recommend Driven HR4 oil. Car runs way better and more stable oil pressure than M1 0W-40. I am at 132,000 miles on my can upgraded LS3 installed at 78,000 miles. Yup 54,000 on a cam job. There's more to oil than the right weight. Driven oils reduce fuel in oil contamination way better than other oils I've used.

The only time Chevy recommends a 0 weight oil is in temps below -20F. In summer temps I would see no reason for it. That HR4 10w30 I think is a wise choice for a hot rodded LS motor. If I ever move to Alaska, i'll be looking hard at those 0 weight oils. Not. |
