Build your Camaro

I like what Ford has done at their website with the "Build Your Mustang" tool. Any chance of GM doing something similar, letting us see what options are available and then seeing which dealers have our build in stock?

Also, will we be able to actually order a custom car when they're released, or just whatever the dealers have? I'm not even sure if people order cars anymore.

Dude, you can do that on every manufacturer's website. And yes, you can "custom" order any car from any manufacturer to an extent (meaning sometimes they limit you to "commonly ordered combinations"), do dealer trades if your local dealer doesn't have the car you want but another one does, or you can reserve a car allocated to the dealership but hasn't been built or hasn't arrived yet.

Yeah, i just did it on the MSN autos site where you design your own Challenger--hell, i'll take it if I win it--put it toward the Camaro or maybe an even trade. Oh wait, that will definitely take 2 Challengers

Yea, after reading his reply I gave it a shot too....

I will say even though I refuse to purchase a mustang, their website is very detailed for accessories in comparison to the corvette or even impala. I have noticed (the vette for instance) is separated into packages/trims but not defined to picking specific accessories like Ford allows? Maybe I visited a local dealer site and not GM? either way..I will get the camaro and if I have to go build it at the dealer as opposed to bringing in a print out ready to go...it may not be what i prefer, but so be it.

i like the Mini cooper build interface cause it actually lets you see every option you choose on a virtual car. Gm needs to do that with the Camaro. Its really sweet looking.

Brantly, you must have not been on the Chevy site, because the Chevy site allows you to select individual options too. In fact every manufacturer's website features a build interface essentially exactly like Ford's. Some are a little better than others, like Bumble Bee's example of Mini, but essentially everyone lets you select trim, colors (int and ext) packages, stand-alone options, accessories, and then see a summary.

ok, maybe its a zip code issue, because when I go on Chevys site and provide my zip...I select impala SS for example...I first get the trim, I choose SS 1SS. After that colors interior/exterior. That is not a huge issue, everyone has colors provided online. So next is options..

NOW, the ONLY thing I can add is radio/speaker upgrade and sunroof. Initially, I figured this was because the SS already had a loaded package (which it does, and when I read it I am pleased) but many of that package I wouldnt need or want on my camaro. I also did the LS through chevy's site and the only thing I can add is keyless entry and moldings...

now...go to ford for the mustang same deal, trim packages and colors. Then followed by wheels which you have 5 rim packages and two different tire packages which are not assigned to a certain trim. Radio packages are offered the same..but then the accessories. You have 30 additional accessories (granted some do cause you to purchase another to correlate the package)...now I am a GM man through and through, but I do commend Ford on this. In some of the SS packages for GM you don't have the option to delete those accessories, UNLESS you go to the dealer and b---- back and forth with them. Accessories such as key less entry, blue tooth, ipod duct, or cargo net? These are 1,200 dollars worth of neat toys that truthfully, I could live without and probably would delete that option if I was given the opportunity online.

Now, before I get burned, realize I have always been a chevy man. My PROBLEM with this and why I bring it to your attention is when I went into chevy.com....wanted an SS trailblazer and used the print off method to bring to the dealer, the website was set up exactly the way it is now. Yes, I got my color, my trim...but there were things I DIDNT WANT in that trim selection, yet there were things I wanted offered by the SS that the other trims just DONT offer, such as the rim package and upgraded performance. Why do I want to spend an additional 1500 for lil perks that I can live without? I would bring my print out in and then you get in an argument with a dealer about how he will "cut me a deal" if I purchase it with the accessories and dont build it. Or my favorite "oooh the dealership down the road has this EXACT vehicle, do you really wanna wait to build it".

So yes, I do have some bad experiences with it, and apologize for the rant. I want to print the damn paper off..and say this is exactly what I want, DONT change it. Give me an estimate and lets get started on it, don't whip out your big a-- trim package book..its done

No - its an impala thing. The typical impala buyer would want a loaded package and be happy with it. The camaro will have a lot more out-of-package options, I'm sure of it. As for the dealers, I don't know what to tell you on that. They're dealers. As for trims having things you don't want - I'm right there with you. I personally hate power windows and locks - but they're standard on a lot of vehicles now and theres just no way to order them with manual ones.
