What can cause oil to come out the exhaust?

The other day i just pulled out of the driveway and just tap the gas, then i heard a noise in the engine and the stabilitrak light came on and all i seen was smoke pouring from the back of the ZL1...l was lucky that i was not far from the house...when i got home i pop the hood and there was a small fire on the passenger side fire wall...after putting that out i notice there was a lot of oil coming from my exhaust..i mean a lot, there is a trail of it when i pulled in my driveway....what happen to my car?

Rings, values, Pistons come to mind. However, I don't see how oil out the tailpipes relates to a small fire in the engine compartment.

Same here. Valve stem seals gone bad or oil control ring could give you oil out the tail pipe, but a fire inside the engine compartment.......?

The fire more than likely was some oil That hit the exhaust manifold or header..

I am thinking something serious like they said that caused a hole in the piston or block and also squirted oil on the exhaust. Sounds like a new engine. But hard to say for sure, could be someone overfilled the oil and dribbled it over the engine which later caught fire and foamed and ended up out the tailpipe. Or transmission cooler line leaking and start fire and the smoke wasn't out of the tailpipe but from under the car. Don't know how any of those tie into the stabilitrak light however.

Gaskets like valve cover gaskets can only hold a small amount of crankcase pressure. If you break/pinch a piston ring or have a hole in a piston the crankcase is exposed to cylinder pressure. This is what we call "blow by" in other words combustion is going down into the crankcase instead of just out the tail pipe like normal.

The gas/oil mix blows out where ever it can find to escape and the sloshing oil also runs out the exhaust every time the exhaust valve opens.

If you are losing oil out the exhaust enough to leave a trail you probably have a hole in the piston.
Time for a new engine.

the ones I'm familiar with are usually a sealed unit with their own lubricant within

The engine/powertrain is covered under a 5year 100K mile warranty. You should be covered for warranty work provided you are stock or very near it.
