MGW is IN!!! A few install tips too

Well I decided to just head over to my in-laws and borrow some tools to do it myself, instead of spending 100+ to have it installed

I got it done in about 2.5 hours, taking my sweet time and....

I LOVE IT!

EXACTLY what this car needed, the throw REALLY does not need to be any shorter IMHO, I don't think I would like it if it was any shorter

If you will be doing it yourself, heres a couple things for the install that I found work well

1) Getting the passenger clip out from the support arm I used both the allen wrench supplied, and a medium length flat head. I slid the flat head in between the clip and the support arm, pushed in the allen wrench while I lifted on the clip with the flat head and it flipped right up. However I could NOT get the clip all the way out for the life of me, I was yanking down on the tranny pretty firmly and it would not clear the heat shielding, so I just got it out far enough to slide the stock assembly out, and slide the MGW in.

2) When installing the bushings into the MGW support arms, I lined them with grease as suggested by George and then pushed one end of the lip in with my hands and used a small flat head to push the other sides of the lip in and then it slid right in, took me all of 1 min to do both.

3) This apply's to those doing it on ramps or jack stands in the driveway since there is barely any room to work between the driveway and the car

After tightening the back bracket and re-mounting the tranny support you then are to tighten the support arms to the main shifter body, you first push up on the shifter so you clear that rod on the tranny, if you tighten the driver side first there is more of a chance you will bring the body down again since you pull the wrench down to tighten, I found it works well to tighten up the passenger first since tightening it you are pushing the wrench up, then you don't have to worry about bringing it down again once you've got your clearance set

Also if you will be using a modified stock boot be careful when you take it out, there are a lot of little plugs that fit into the steel plate surrounding the shifter and if you pull too hard you will rip the boot, which is what happened to me. If I had to do it again I would find a way to cut all those off from underneath if possible or get one end off from the top and snip them all the way around.

I think thats it, otherwise George's video guide was just as AWESOME as his product!

I was just trying to decide which shifter to go with. I think you sold me... I was going to go for the GMPP Hurst shifter, but a friend of mine has an MGW in his Vette and it's awesome.

Thanks for the extra notes. Hopefully as soon as I get back from Brazil, I'll be able to install it. I'll order it while I'm down there at work.

I was in the initial run but didn't get a new boot. Is that something that I had to pay extra for or are you planning on shipping the boots out to the guys in the initial run when you get them in?
