Hurst Shifter install pointers
Tomorrow we are installing the Hurst shifter in my car. The one thing I'm worried about is baking something when we are taking off the console.
Is there anything I need to watch for when we are taking off the console? Thanks!!! |

Actually the only thing you have to remove on the inside is the trim around the shifter. Start at the cupholder end and grab it from the boot side and SLOWLY pull it up. Work towards the gauge end, and when all the tabs are clear move it towards the cupholder; there are two tabs that point forward. Just follow the Hurst directions and you will be OK! Oh, it is easier to pry the stock knob off from under it; there is a flat area on the stock stick that you can use a pry bar on. One more thing; there is a heat shield under the car pretty close to where you will stick your arm/s up to remove the assembly. Just remove the two speed nuts and four bolts that hold the underfloor brace and shield, then just slide the shield back. Save the blood donation for the Red Cross!

I did mine this weekend. Its easy and the previous post are right.
If you dont have a lift, raise the front and back of the car. I put the car up about 1' Makes the job a snap. Center cluster removal: This was my biggest fear, breaking somehting. Fear not, it comes right off. The hold on the clips is not very srong. Pull easy, do not yank. The shift knob removal: Sit on the console and put on leg on each side (straddle the center tunnel) and take the boot over the knob (like removing a kids shirt) and it pops right off. No need to pry anything. I didn't remove the heat shield and i still have all my blood! No wounds here. Removing the pin clips is a bit tricky. Just make sure you dont drop and lose them! I dropped one but lockily it fell right on my chest. Removing the 10?mm bolts... remove the shift linkage pin first then yank the linkage out of the shifter and move it side to side depending what bolt you are removing. makes access easier. Installing the hex screws is a PITA due to access. I put a dab of grease on the allen socket head and put the screw on. the grease held it in place so i could get it up in the hole since its a VERY small screw and a very tight location. Ever play the game operation? Putting the dust cover back on SUCKS. you have to try to get both hands up there... good luck! Once you are done under the car, you are home free! MOST IMPORTANTLY: Work slow and take you time. Read the directions, they are perfect. Enjoy. I have 400+ miles on my car since the install yesterday... WOW ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() But I ordered this knob today. I think it is way nicer in black and doesn’t have the redundant shift pattern. ![]() It was super easy to install. About 2 hours in the driveway taking our time and trying to figure the best way to get the car up so I could get under it. It was a no-nonsense install. |

Installed mine last weekend!!!
![]() Yes to everything jrhaus76 said; including the part about playing Operation ![]() Do watch out for the heat sheild that 2ssjack mentioned... ![]() If you drop anything while working underneath the car, it will probably land on the heat sheild... ![]() It really is pretty easy and I really love ours!!!

If you can wait a day, I will have the official installation video up on our YouTube site. It is 99.99% done I'm just waiting on the production company to finish a minor edit. I'm leaving the office tonight, but I may be able upload it tonight.

Did anyone install the Hurst shifter with the OEM camaro stick and the factory knob? The OEM camaro stick that comes with the hurts kit looks a little shorter than the chromed one, so I guess that using the OEM camaro stick should provide even shorter shifting...
