Hurst vs MTI vs MGW vs ???
I want to buy a short throw shifter and it seems 90% of the people on this forum love Hurst but what is the differences good and bad from all of the other shifters? Are there any other shifters out there that I dont know about?

I installed the MTI 6 shooter shifter yesterday. I purchased it from MTI at their event at the Talladega Grand Prix. Took me 3 leisurely hours start to finish and I did not remove or lower the exhaust as they show in their instructions. I'm sure I could cut the install time substantially if I wanted to. The way I installed the shifter was a hybrid of MTI instructions and Hurst shifter instructions. Working alone the thought of wrestling with the exhaust was not an option for me. Best way I can describe it is part of the shifter build up was done on the bench and part of it was done with the shifter assembly in the car. Although I performed the install on a lift, it could be done on the ground on jack stands, but at age 52 I prefer to stand while working versus crawling around on the floor. As far as I'm concerned the MTI six shooter is the only way to go, 25% shift reduction, bone stock quiet, all the play and vague rubber feeling is gone, smooth as glass feel and retains the stock look if you prefer, which I did. With it's unique shaft design you can use the stock pressed on knob or an aftermarket screw on type knob. The parts in the kit are of unequaled quality with excellent instructions even though I made my own decision to change the install method. I had many Hurst equipped 60's, 70's and 80's muscle/pony cars over the years but the MTI shifter on the '10 Camaro Tremec 6speed is the best feeling and shifting setup to date. I don't work for MTI and I paid full retail for the shifter, I'm just a happy customer. Ed M.

IT all comes down to personal preference. Hurst has a ton of units out there with many happy customers and has national and worldwide distribution so there are many more units sold then some of the other competing products. It is a solid shifting action with a very old school muscle car feel. MGW appears to be a nice product as well and have a solid reputation. There shifter from what I've seen and heard seems to have a smooth shift effort and less of a overall throw reduction than the hurst. I have not seen an MTI unit so I cant speak of it, although I have not heard of them other than on this forum.

I would agree that it is all about preference, I have the Hurst and am very happy with it's old school look and feel, from what I've heard the MGW sounds like it could be a little more refined and I haven't heard much about MTI. You will more than likely be very pleased with any of these units.

"flht99b What took you so long to install the shifter, you bought it months ago..lol Glad you like it, 1 of the best things I bought for my car" Mike, good to hear from you. Yeah, work and my sons projects ( youngest son '96 Mustang vert, oldest son '98 Aurora ) still come first. Actually installed it Saturday 11/7 so I've made it a point to drive the car every evening after work ( work from home so no commute ) and I like the MTI shifter more each day. I figured out a "more efficient" way to install it then MTI's instructions show, if I had to do it again I certainly could do it in 2 hours or less and still not drop the exhaust. I am absolutely certain that the MTI shifter will last like a factory engineered part, not convinced brand H will and haven't gotten my hands on a MGW yet but it looks good also. I'm looking at the Eibach 1" lowering springs and the MTI or Eibach bars as my next projects and if GMPP ever releases their shorty headers I'll probably install them too. Just picked up a spare set of SS/RS wheels & tires with 3 miles on them. So what will I see new on your car next April at the Camaro5fest ??? Ed M. |

I have a MGW shifter and absolutly love it. Short, smooth crisp throws and as quiet as the stock shifter.

The shortest throw goes to Barton. I have installed on both the V8 and V6. I have also helped with the MGW and Hurst. MGW was a great shifter but you need to install a complete setup. The Hurst had rattling problem that they now have a work around for ? The best for the money, $100-$200 cheaper than the rest is Barton. It is almost a 50% reduction in throw, simple to install and the quality is fantastic. Do yourself a favor and search on the forum and you will be surprised at the number of Barton fanatics ! I'm in !

Hurst has an update kit for those that already have one and it rattles under hard acceleration and high RPM. It's supposed to come with the shifters from now on. I will probably go with Hurst because I'm nostalgic for the T-handle they offer.

I am wondering if the rattling that some Hurst customers are having could be caused by a faulty installation.
