Shorty Header / Tuning Question
I recently installed a set of JBA Shorty Headers on my LS3. I was told by JBA that I have to disconnect my battery so the ECU will "relearn" the AFR and adjust accordingly. If I disconnect the battery, will I get a service error message and have to reset all my radio controls? Is there a way to shut down the ECU without disconnecting the battery to achieve the same purpose?

Just disconnect the 2 black connectors from the pcm. It is by the radiator on the passenger side.

Thanks. I'll check it out. FYI, I actually lost HP after installing the headers. JBA said it was because I did not disconnect the battery. They told me thatafter the system relearns that I should be picking up around 18 RWH without special tuning. Have you heard about this?

The pcm appears to be directly below the fuse box. I see the two connectors. How do they uncouple? The is a black and a red flip of some sort on each one.

you might ck out the fuse pull fix for the L99s... should give you the same results.. theres a thread on it.. just pull the #5 and 20 i think.. but read first! 8)

I'd be interested in feedback on the JBA fit and finish, where you purchased them, etc. Ed M.

I would be interested in any feedback as well. I plan on getting shorty headers at some point and heard of DT, Borla and now JBA. Interested in the differences in HP gains and fit and finish between them.

I did the initial dyno-pull to establish the first baseline so I could track the HP increases per each component I add. The first pull produced 372.29 RWHP with 376.23 RWT. That's about 427 HP off the flywheel. Right after the headers were installed it actually dropped about 6 RWHP and 2 RWT. This is due to not disconnecting the battery to allow the ECU to "relearn." It was also suprising to see how rich the bone stock engine is set from the factory. After the second pull, I called JBA and they told me to disconnect the battery, reconnect in about 10 minutes then run another dyno-pull after the ECU adjusts the AFR and timing. I am a bit reluctant to disconnect the battery away from the shop. I don't want to get stuck if any problems arise. I might just pull the #5 and #20 fuses or let the engine readjust itself over time. Dustin at JBA sent me 18 RWHP + 21 WRT gain results with their shorties on another LS3 that was installed after reset. Shawn at Superior Engineering stated that after he dyno-tuned his LS3 he produced an extra 20 RWHP without headers. Pretty incredible! Air/Fuel was improved tremendously. Hopefully I will able to achieve 400+ RWHP once the system recalibrates with the GMPP Tracker exhaust addded. The dyno-tune should push it well over 400 afterwards.

Fit and finish on the JBA Shorties are excellent. I ordered them titanium ceramic coated. They look sweet! I'll keep you informed on the dyno-pulls and tuning.

All LS3s I dynoed are 372-377 RWHP Bone Stock so Yours are correct, they may be showing Lower baseline numbers and end up where you are now to show a gain. I don't expect Shorties to do anything on this car, as the Cats are the Restriction not the Manifolds. Ted.

From the base dyno-pull, it did not appear that they were dyno-tuned from the factory. The power curve was somewhat erratic and the air-fuel was very rich. Mine was quite consistent with what I saw on two other bone stock Camaro LS3 engines which were dyno-pulled the same day. I saw another dyno of an LS3 with JBA shorty headers which after relearn gained 18 RWHP without dyno-tuning. Of course, my preference would be to go with long tube headers with either no cats or better cats, however I live out here in California where the CA Air Resouce Board prohibits these modifications.
