What a neighbor!

So I'm in my upstairs apartment today and here a neighbor coming. As I look out the window I see him fling open his driver side door which smacked my passenger side door which set off my car alarm for all the neighbors to here.

After talking to him about it and be as non confrontational as I possibly could, he says "Well I guess you should use the 60 day return policy and return it", "Shouldn't buy a car with such cheap material (referring to the body)", "Shouldn't have a car like that around here", "You seriously want me to pay for a small ding like that", "Wait, you actually want my insurance provider for that".

The worst encounter with anyone in my life (really the worst encounter) is living right by me. I expected a ding eventually from a parking lot or the like but when I actually see it happening from my next door neighbor (seriously his door is 3 inches from mine in the appartment building) and he refuses to pay is just really frustrating!

It's my first situation like this ever. Feels like an episode of Cops!

I think I got him to agree to pay for at least half the damages but he already took off and I see his car parked here maybe 2 days out of every other week. Tomorrow I"m going to the local police department to make a record of it.

What a pain :(

The actual ding is about the size of a dime and the dentless repair guys gave me an estimate of about 75 bucks.

borrow someones car that is a beater and park next to him and open your door with force and just put a huge dent in his car.

then pull out the lines he used "oh, you really want me to pay for that?" "oh, you shouldn't park your car here"

"the wind just caught the door, I swear it just flew open like crazy"

seriously this guy just grinds my gears

By law you should have called the cops IMMEDIATELY! Doesn't matter who he is. His insurance would have paid anyway regardless. You can't assume people will cover damages out of pocket to avoid insurance claims because they will just dodge you or skip town. Unless they are a relative or a REALLY great neighbor, never assume. Always call the police and if he leaves, he'll be leaving the scene of a crime. Yes, it IS a crime to leave the scene of an accident. Always memorize his plate and make and model if you can. Happened to me once. Never again.

"Agree to pay half the damages?" WTF?! No sir. He either pays it all or none. You can't take any responsibility for this sh!t! Call you insurance company immediately and get them involved. This situation will cost you nothing! They will contact his company for you. Provide them with the police report number, his name, address, and his license plate number. They will be able to source his company don't you worry. You will pay nothing. Then take the car to the dealership for repair. When he bitches later tell him you gave him a chance to take responsibility but he gave you a hard time so you let the law handle it.

It is too late for that. He needed to call the police right away for the report. After the fact with him taking off and settling it already, it is too late. :(

similar thing happened to me a few years ago. the short story is that the guy ended up getting three tickets (no registration, license or insurance) and leaving the scene of an accident. a few hundred dollar dent cost the guy several thousand. my advice, call the cops.

I wouldn't do anything to him. Remember you already know he's a dick so why provoke him. you have to live beside the ass.
