Paint concerns

I have had my Camaro 2SS since May 15 2009, I have just turned 12,000 miles. It has been a great car very minor issues. But I am concerned with the paint. I know when GM cars were built in the USA that they were painted by a dipping process and electrically charged. I know that the new camaros are painted and not to good. The paint chips very easy and at the rear behind the doors infront of the rear wheels is especially bad chips chips chips. complete paint removal down to the primer. I would like to know if anyone else is seeing this. My Camaro is Black. no stripes just black on black.

Cars are not painted by dipping, they are sprayed. There is an anti corrosion process that involves dipping the body shell in a tank of electrically charged solution.

You will see owners of most other brands of cars reporting this same problem. I think the EPA requirements leading to lower VOC paints contribute to the durability problem. My black Honda has chips all over the hood which look pretty bad and the paint is very thin. This problem shows up much more on darker colors. Certain areas of the car will be more prone to this problem than others, like the flared area in front of the rear wheels that extends a little further out than the doors do. I don't think there's much you can do, except for not driving your car, which is not an option.

BTW....this is a beautiful pic of your car with the mountain in the background.

I have the Aqua Blue Metallic 2SS/RS. I have also noticed how easily the paint chips. I have only had mine since Sept 24th and I have 4 chips already. This paint is so thin. My first chip was in the same place as yours. In front of the rear tire on the flared out fender. My latest chip was yesterday when I was on my way home on the highway and a dump truck was losing rocks all over everyone behind him. I just ordered some touch up paint from the dealership. It's pathetic that you pay so much for a beautiful car and the paint chips off so easily.

There is now a PI (PIE0017A) on the chipping problem on the front fascia. Looks like the PI was revised because of the "A" but I don't remember seeing it before. Here is a copy/paste on part of the PI. There is contact info in the PI that I will not include. There is NO fix on this PI just pictures and info sent to GM Engineering by the dealer.

Quote:
Condition

Important: If the customer did not bring their vehicle in for this concern, DO NOT proceed with this PI.

Some customers may comment that there is an issue with the paint on the front bumper fascia. These can be a variety of paint issues that may include, but are not limited to chips in the paint, bubbles or dirt in the paint and paint mismatch.
Cause

GM Engineering is attempting to determine the root cause of the above condition. Engineering has a need to gather information on vehicles PRIOR to repair that may exhibit this condition. As a result, this information will be used to "root cause" the customer's concern and develop/validate a field fix.
Instructions

GM Engineering would like pictures taken of the paint issue and e-mailed to the engineer listed below prior to repairing the paint. The e-mail should include the following information:
• Pictures clearly showing the paint issue, including a detailed picture of the condition and the location on the fascia.
• Detailed description of the issue
• Complete VIN
• Vehicle mileage
• Dealership contact name and phone number

I concur....cars at this price should not chip this easy. I have 3 myself, but dealer is handling it cause it happened when they drove it to deliver to me.

I have chips on the hood and gills with under 4k miles. Pretty ridiculous how easy it chips.

We can all thank the EPA for mandating the types of paint OEM's are allowed to use.

I have the same issue on my IOM. Just today I saw my wife lightly "tap" her door open into the camaro and the paint chipped all the way down to the primer.

3.5k and chips. Even minor chips are more noticable on this car than any other car Ive had. The paint is so thin that even a tiny chip you can see primer. The hood is the worst.

I hope y'all are putting these paint issues down on your satisfaction surveys to GM... if people don't complain, GM won't do anything. (Especially if this may be related to environmental requirements, it gives GM an excuse to point the finger at the government instead of finding a way to make the new paint formulations more durable)
