Can I have the Dealer inspect pre-owned blackbox data for me?
Seems an obscure question but important to me. There are quite a few used 2010 Camaro's for sale out there. Compared to Additional Dealer Markups (ADM stickers), it seems wiser to buy a pre-owned Camaro right now.
Everyone tells you they babied their cars when it comes time to sell them but frequently the truth is quite the opposite. If there was vehicle abuse it could be stored in the Event Data Recorder (ECR), Powertrain Control Module (PCM) or Crash Data Recorder (CDR). I was wondering if anyone with knowledge of this subject can comment on the dealer's ability to read information for a charge ($$)? Meaning can I have a seller bring their car to Chevy and I would pay the dealer technician to download things like number of launch control uses, or rem limiter hits, etc.. No alternative agenda here, just trying to find a way of avoiding abused cars. Example, FWIW, I was told about a GT500 that had power pulley's for blower and drag wheels & tires put on it and abused quite thoroughly at the strip for some time. If a person like that ever swapped the parts and wheels back you'd have a hard time telling. Could be low miles but heavy on wear. Thank you. |

I don't know if they could, but would they tell you the truth?

Might be possible, hope it is. That's what I'm wondering. Other manufacturers have stored this type of event data for warranty compliance. Hoping to use it as a last mechanical check once a seller & I agree on a price.

No way of knowing how they drove a used car unless your a cop investigating an accident or you have an inside friend at the dealer.
