indexing time question
Guys, how long does your usb or mp3 player take to index?
I have about 4GB on my Zune and an 8GB thumbdrive. The thumbdrive takes every bit of 8-10 minutes to index, with the Zune taking about as long if not longer. The head unit is running CE software. Is this normal??? |

How are the songs arranged? Are they in files according to the album?
Do you have any files that are not songs? Depending on how they are arranged it may increase the index time slightly and having any files that are not songs will drastically increase index time. |

My 32gb with about 10gb of music takes about 2min to index on subsequent starts. It took much longer the first time. If you swap devices, I believe it loses the previous index entirely and has to start from scratch which takes forever.

I think the long re-indexing happens if you put in a different device- switching ipod with flashdrive at the usb port. I've taken same device out of usb port, only to replug it in later with minimal reindexing time. Same with cd's.

maybe that is my problem...i cleaned up my thumbdrive with a freeware program last night. Thereafter it took about 6 minutes to index. Then this morning it indexed in about 45 seconds...go figure.
