New Audi Electric Protype has 3,391 lb TQ

"The e-tron looks like a cross between an Audi R8 and an electric razor. The one-off concept EV is fueled by a lithium-ion battery pack mounted in front of the rear axle and is propelled by four electric motors, one powering each wheel to deliver all-wheel drive. Audi says total output is 313 horsepower and 3,319 lb-ft of torque. No, that number isn't a typo. Electric motors produce gobs of torque, which means they have an enormous amount of get up and go from a standstill. The e-tron will supposedly gallop to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds, only about 0.8 seconds slower than the company's R8 4.2 with its gas-powered V8 engine."

WOW thats just crazy. If electric cars can do this and get me at least 400 miles on a single charge and keep the performance up to par, sign me up.

You had me right up to the 400 miles per charge part.

That is far beyond any battery technology in existence. The only Electrical Vehicle that can do that is the Chevy Volt and that is with the on board generator that can maintain the charge level for operation.

Even the cars that are "claiming" 100 miles per charge are small light vehicles packed full of battery.

I saw an articale about the Tesla (I think in Automobile magazine) and they illustrated the real-world "electric car" costs.... apparently all that battery charging consumes a LOT of power on the old power grid. It apparently uses so much extra power that you get put into a higher rate per kilowatt hour. The cost per mile was not much better than a typical dead dinosaur powered vehicle.

Yeah I know thats why I won't be buying anything electrical until that tech exists.

Even if thats true, the emissions output would be far lower. Probably never going to have the range of a gasoline vehicle though - at least, not without something like the generator in the volt.

Wow, thats not impressive at all. The Camaro has 3633 ft-lbs. Thats the V6 by the way. Automatic. 6M is a hair under 4000.And the LS3 power cars? ~4360. L99? Bit over 5400.

Yup, they gave us the equivalent to theoretical wheel torque, not crank.

The transmission and final drive multiply the torque coming from the motor. This Audi doesn't have a transmission, but there is still a reduction gear to increase the torque from the motor. So the most accurate way to compare it would be to take the 1st gear ratio from a car x final drive x engine torque, which yeilds the numbers I gave for the Camaro.

Think about it, how could an AWD car with 10x the toque of most performance cars have a 0-60 in the high 4 second range without being insanely more massive? If it actually had that much torque it would be more than any semi tractor on the road.

Honestly, I thought about questioning the torque number the same way you did but I don't know THAT much about cars lol. I don't really know much about them when it comes down to very technical things like you described.
