Question Engine block heater, anyone order one?

I got the engine block heater with my 2LT Auto. Am I the only person to get this option?

I plugged it in one night, but couldn't see any difference in the temp gauges the next morning when I started driving. I can't find anything in the owners manual about the block heater option.

This is my first car with a block heater. The temperature was 1 degree (F, not C) this morning. I want to know how I make sure it is working, how long to leave it plugged in, how the Camaro one works, etc.

Anyone else order it?
Anyone got info on it?

I do not have one on the Camaro, but I do on the Pickup. It is a heating element in one of the freeze plugs. You can feel the heat in the block on mine.

Hey Eduk8r - Thanks for reminding me to think of the obvious. Currently its 17 degrees here, and forecasted to bottom out at 12 tonight. Even though it won't be that cold in the garage, it should be a good night to plug in the heater and see if the block feels cold or warm tomorrow.

Hey MrBrans5, glad I could remind you of another feature you ordered. :-)

Are you serious, pluging a block heater at those temps. The block heater is a cold weather starting aid, designed to keep the engine block and oil warm in extreme cold weather (BELOW ZERO). trust me I live in the frozen north where the temp can get to 20 yes 20 below zero, thats when you need a block heater.

Current generation GM block heaters are designed to come on at zero degrees or below only, at 1 degree your block heater would have been off. It'sforecasted to be
around 25 below zero here in Great Falls on Monday night Dec. 8 block heaters are also in the forecast.
Is it getting cold anywhere else?

Yes.......they are controlled now. Not just a heat coil that is on all the time.

There are oil pan pucks for those who did not get the RPO KO5.

Hey man, I cant get the Camaro started this evening and I've had the block heater plugged in for over an hour 1/2 so far. Do you think it needs 3to4 hours to get it warmer? It's -32c tonight :(

The car will not fire up and all the computer malfunctions.

Tomorrow's weather forecast is calling for a windchill of -45 to -50C here in Calgary. I think that's around -55F. A block heater is a must around here.

I've found that at those temperatures, at least 2 hours is needed for the block heater to be of proper use. Since the Camaro's engine is larger than I'm used to, probably more time than that is needed. -32 is VERY cold!
