Powder coating question.

How easy is it to "mess up" a powder coating job.

I recently dropped my car off to have the rims powder coated flat black, which was over a week ago. Called today to see how they going since its been longer then they thought and was told that they "messed them up and were re-doing them." Is that a believable story? Or am I getting a lot of BS?

It is possable to mess up the powder coating. If the powder isnt put on evenly due to the charge not being evenly ditributed throughout the wheel, it could come out splotchy looking and to redo it you have to strip the whole wheel wich is a PITA. The easiest way to strip it is to acid dip it and if thats not available they have to sand blast it of and that takes forever because powdercoating is TOUGH!

Is it believable that a shop would admit to a screw-up and say "messed them up and we`re re-doing them"?, is to me almost amazing. I would consider that these are probably people who are at least trying to act like a responsible shop and not feed the customer a line. And as BlaSSt Off stated that stuff is HARD. Let us know how it turned out I might consider these people in the future even if it is a coast to coast ship.

So do I think it`s BS? No. Good luck with your wheels.

Cool, great answers. I'm sorta leaning towards the guy is just fessing up and he sent them back to the powder coater because they weren't done well enough.

I dont the specifics of how its done, so figured ide ask.

Thanks a bunch.

150 a wheel and 100 for mounting/balancing.

I haven't actually gotten the car back yet though, so we will see.

If I didn't need to commute to work everyday it wouldn't be an issue, maybe they put it on the backburner or are just taking their time.

Unfortunately untill they are done I don't have a car.

Yea, and the weather outside right now isn't even good so I wont get to show them off when they are done.

A shop in Oakland quoted me 75/wheel but I would have had to brought them the rims by themselves, no clue where to put the car while it has no wheels.
