2-3 Shift Flare on 6L80E
My 6l80E transmission has recently started to shift flare between 2 and 3 when I'm hard on the gas. It only seems to do it when I'm in full auto, not when paddle shifting. I'm probably around 480 rwhp. What are the chances that this is something off in the tune or is it likely time for a transmission rebuild? Car is at about 80k miles of which I've only put on a few thousand myself after adding the LSA supercharger.

How's your tranny fluid level?

It's full but not overfilled the 3/4 quart that Circle D and some others recommend.

How long ago was it tuned. Has it been fine and now starting to act up ? Does fluid still look good.

It's been about 1 year plus and I didn't notice it until recently although the 2-3 shift was always a little softer than the others. I really don't put my foot into it hard that often. I haven't check the transmission fluid since I added the transmission cooler last summer, but the temperature is always at 180F. I'll check the fluid color this weekend and maybe do the 3/4 quart overfill.

I'd up the line pressure some and reset adapts to see if it helped.
Might be time for a rebuild since your blown now though. Tim King @ TK Performance is an excellent builder. Will need a trans retune after a rebuild.

Wasn’t there a thing with the 6l80 under high load sucking the pan dry or all the fluid sloshing to the back away from the pickup? Jeremy from faster proms said he runs a quart overfill on purpose to prevent this.

I actually bought hp tuners a couple of months ago but haven't had time to even open the box yet. I've got an appointment next week with another local tuner to re-dyno it and review my tune. If that doesn't get me anywhere I'll get with you. I may get with you anyway when I get a chance to get hp tuner going. Thanks.

I overfilled the transmission by just short of 1 quart and based upon a limited drive, it may have resolved my problem.

It still acted funny at random times. It wasn't something I could replicate, and seemed to be more when I got on it some but not all the way and happened to let off the gas about the time that it shifted. I took it back to the tuner about a month ago for a few more tweaks and it hasn't happened since, but I haven't driven it a lot since then other than 2 days of hard mountain driving this past weekend.
I think that I had/have 2 different problems. Before I overfilled the transmission 1 quart, I seemed to have minor shift flare every time I got on it real hard. This went away with the increased fluid, but still had an occasional problem that may have been tune related. Only time will tell if that is completely cured. To some extent, I've stopped worrying about, I'm going to drive it until it breaks and then get a performance rebuild. |
