I was happy, but now I'm pissed off

Finally got around to modding my car a little and been loving it, just did high flow cats and a z28 cold air intake, I was pleasantly surprised with the boost in power and sound. So my ego has been pretty high, smoked a couple little 3 series bmws and a couple whatever cars from redlight to redlight just playing around a couple night ago.

So tonight I roll up next to this guy in a 2012ish model mustang gt, it sounds pretty loud but he claims its stock... so we did a quick little 20-80 mph race and he pulled away quite a bit, I was actually surprised at how much faster his car was. I figured if anything it would be a tie, but I honestly thought I'd beat him. So that's why I'm pissed. I'm not going to go crazy with mods but what do I need to beat you regular old run of the mill gt or rt? Gears? A tune? Or am I just shit out of luck unless willing to make major changes?

An L99 needs a tune at the bare minimum to really wake up. In my opinion, you are going to be sorely disappointed until you do. I was.

Longtubes wouldn't hurt either, especially for your top end.

Thanks, yeah tune is next on my list. I researched a little and I think the mustangs gearing is what beat me. They have either 3.55 or 3.73 gears so in the short sprint it makes sense I guess that he would leave me. If it was a longer race I guess I would have started reeling him in maybe? I dont know...

Yeah not to beat a dead horse but definitely want to get a tune. I bought a SCT X4 from DynoSteve and RDP Motorsports as my first mod. DynoSteve made a few small adjusts and he tightened up the tranny/shifting quite a bit for my L99 and I could tell a difference. And on the upside if you buy from them you get lifetime tunes included which was a big positive and well worth the money. When I got my cold air, I had Steve send me another tune and I'm going to do the same when I do headers. I'd say that a tune, headers, and 3.91 gears would be a good start without going too overboard.

Great advice, thanks. I'm a little worried about getting long tubes right now because my car is already borderline too loud on cold starts, I have 3 very young children and an old neighbor, if I go any louder it wouldn't be good lol. Ill probably have to slap some mufflers back on. And I love the idea of getting the 3.91 gears but I'm worried about that as well, will I be able to catch traction with my 315 all seasons in the rear? I have to run all season because i daily drive and it rains a lot. Also, I dont know much about how the 3.91s would affect the l99 car across the spectrum. I'm definately more interested in the short sprints than quater mile, but I dont want to give up too much if any at all in the higher ranges, and I also dont want to loose significant gas mileage. Would the 3.91s make a big difference in 20 rolls or 40 rolls?

If he really is stock that sounds about right. Im bolt on and tune l99 and i got walked by stock coyotes when i was intake only. Longtubes intake and tune now and I beat stock ones. You should be able to be an RT right now.

Ok, tune is definately the next thing on my list. I'm probably going to tune myself since I have hp tuners now. I dont have a wideband though so I'm probably going to correct fuel trims isolating the maf first and then the ve coefficients, then I'm going to look at pe table, then I will look at timing. I'm not very familiar with transmission tuning though, anyone have an idea what I should do for transmission and torque management?
And just the clarify a little, I'm mostly interested in shift pressure, shift points, etc

I just read some old threads on here about roll racing with the l99 and litterally everyone said that the l99 is horrible at roll racing from low speeds like 25mph (which is what i did) because of the gearing and is much better from a dig, which makes sense with the aggressive 1st gear. Had I known that I would have suggested a different format for the race instead of committing suicide. Oh well, I learn something new everyday about these cars.

Did you ever think the mustang lied about his mods? If the loss was that bad he could be lying about being stock.

Yea, I was thinking the same thing. Probably got lied to.

But let's not discount something that a lot of Camaro guys don't like to admit. The Coyote, if it was one, is a freaking beast even in stock form. Hopefully it was a Coyote and you didn't get walked by a stock 4.6. That would hurt.
