Loudmouth 1 verses straight Pipe

Why would you buy a Loudmouth 1 system or any other brand that was just a straight pipe setup when you can have a muffler shop remove the stock mufflers and run straight pipes. Are there any advantages to the systems. My muffler shop will cut out mufflers and put in pipes for $65.00. Also why not cut out mufflers and install another brand like flowmasters. Looks should still be the same and just have cost of the mufflers without their pipes. Am I missing something here. Also I have 2SS with AFM so there is another issue.

You are correct. The LM1 is simply a glorified muffler delete that comes with nicer tips, is made of stainless steel, and can be installed without welding. I had my muffler shop cut the stock mufflers out and weld in stainless pipes for under $100.00. It sounded great until I installed the long tubes. Then it was too loud for my taste.

You could also have aftermarket mufflers, such as flowmasters, welded in and obtain similar sound as a full catback. The only advantage of catbacks is that they are generally lighter than stock, have better flowing pipes (mandrel bends), and replace the factory h-pipe with a better flowing x-pipe. However, a catback has been shown to provide little hp gains over stock. Ultimately, it's a question of cost v. quality/performance- if you want the best possible performance regardless of cost, then a catback is the way to go. I personally was not willing to pay $700+ for negligible performance gains.

thread Jack:

JuicedSS - did you get a tune with your LT? If not, did you get a code along with them?

I have not tuned the car yet, and am not sure if I will. I did get rear O2 sensor codes. I have reset the ECM twice and the check engine light will stay off for a few hundred miles before coming back on.

Maybe it's because in many states it is technically illegal to drive around without mufflers, at least that's what i've heard. Especially in those states that require yearly inspection, i've heard it can be difficult to pass those inspections with straight pipes. If you bought an aftermarket system, at least you can say you installed some sort of muffler system?!?!?! Just a thought...

I have thought the same thing about this.

If you get the LM1 and plan to get the SLP PowerFlo-X #30220, then you should get the LM1. Thats what I'm planning to do! Its going to sound GOOD!

Can't be that illegal. There have been factory cars that ship without a muffler of any kind. Remember the original SRT4?

No mufflers on the LM1, so it's not going to help. Plus, you still have to cut off the stock muffs and clamp on the LM1.
