Spider-Spikes? (or Spikes-Spiders) - Camaro5 Chevy Camaro Forum / Camaro ZL1, SS and V6 Forums

Anyone have, or heard, of any experiences with these? At around $500 for a pair it's certainly cheaper than an $1100 set of winters. In the DC area, snow is light and only comes around a couple of times per winter so winter tires are too much of an expense.

Those are pretty intense. In fact, I'm not sure that they are legal in some states for fear of damaging roads. I don't know anyone who has used them, nor have I even seen them in person.

Since you raised the question I went to look at State chain laws and now am wondering if this "fear of damaging roads" might be an urban legend - or a law that was once true but has been revised. According to this, and this, and this, chains and/or other "reasonable" traction devices are allowed in all states. Only a few restrict them to use only during certain fall/winter months.

If the P-zeros are as bad as people are saying in the cold, then I'm seriously considering them. Though I must say that I've driven a couple of mornings in the 20's and haven't noticed any traction or handling problems. Granted it wasn't snowing. But I did tool around town while snowing a couple of weeks ago (melted when it hit the road, stuck on the ground) and the temps were in the mid-30's and, again, had no problems keeping traction. OTOH, in the past I had severe traction problems with my rear-wheel drive Astro Van and my FWD Ford Focus when the roads weren't plowed/salted adequately.

Thule makes a version of spikes-spiders as well about $100 cheaper. Beware though that none of them come with 22mm lug adapters which I *think* the SS/RS 20's have.

Well, out of options. Niether the Thule K Summit K56 nor the spikes-spider has the lug adapters needed to fit a camaro. Autosock and Go-Claws doesn't fit the 275/40/20's.
