some one help lol
SOOOOOO I am very deep into this and I can't go back now guys, I am almost home free. It all started with a bad bad knock blah blah I pulled over had it towed immediately. Myself as well as my shop thought for sure it was a lifter (and well it was one of the things) caused damaged to my cam, and well I took it as an opportunity to do what I always wanted to do and throw a stage three in there, also trunnion upgrade, oil pump the whole bit due to my high mileage.
So cam swap done, my mechanic texted me " hey bud its all put together, but still knocking sounds like its coming from the lower end..." WHAT Long story short I spun a bearing, crank got sent to machine shop for a polish and was replaced, and my crankshaft bearing and cam bearings were replaced by i believe gem. I will attach pic of mechanics notes. anyway, after a week of having the car back (running great) I noticed my oil pressure once the car is warmed up idles around 12PSI it goes up to about 30psi if I get on it and it starts at 30 psi at a cold start. What could this be? should I hope its the oil pump and go with a melling? Literally anything helps |

Sounds like maybe a little pinch in the o-ring on the oil pump pickup OR loose clearance in the bearings... really hard to tell given how much was replaced. I would definitely contact the shop and express your concerns.

I would lean towards bearing clearances a little on the large end. Doesn't look like they plasti-gaged the bearings. If the crank was turned down the bearings are thicker but should be checked for clearances. What oil are you running? If running 30 weight might change to 40 if the bearings have a little more clearance. You can change the oil pump out too. Ideally you want 10PSI per 1k RPM

Loose/larger clearances can be compensated by a higher volume pump or higher pressure pump? I really don't want my car ripped apart again i just can't afford it. The cross frame bar is cut where the oil pan can easily be dropped so replacing an oil pump would be cake

It is really hard to know why it is happening. If the tolerances are on the bigger end it can cause a lower oil pressure. As long as nothing else is wrong, yes it can be taken care of with a higher volume/pressure oil pump, the tolerances would still have to be within reason. You may pick up some oil pressure just by changing to a 40 weight if you are still running 30 weight. The pans are large enough not to have to worry about sucking the oil pan dry. I would still bring it up to your builder first. If you do the pump you will be able to see if there was an installation error there and that would relieve the concern of a bearing problem.

Bearing clearance would be my guess, rod/main. States oem gm bearings in the parts list. Are they standard bearings? If surfaces were ground or polished, standard bearings may not provide the correct clearances. I would find it hard to believe that the clearances were not checked.

Alot of times its the cam bearings, they gotta be checked when swapping out cams or you end up with this.

Count me in with bearing clearance. You can try a high volume pump and perhaps a thicker oil.
Cam bearings is a possibility, but given the info on the crank, that's where I hedge my bet. If the pump and the oil don't do it, start shopping for a forged crank shaft. |
