How do you remove the fender flare adhesive?
Awhile back I purchased some Z28 rockers, flares, bumper covers, and front fenders.
I was finally able to remove the flares from the front fenders. Now I need to clean the old adhesive off the fenders & flares. The Service Manual says to use a 50/50 mix of isopropyl alcohol and water. I made the mix and used a cloth shop towel and rubbed on it for 15 minutes and can't see that it has done anything. I don't want to try commercial adhesive removers or acetone on the flares. Some of those will damage plastic. Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks Craig

Xenit Citrus from Stoner. Use it to remove 3M adhesive gently.

If it’s 2 part adhesive, you’ll have a very difficult time with any citrus(goo gone) or wd40 until you get it removed down to a very thin layer. To get it to a thin layer, use a new razor and slice it very carefully as not to touch the paint. Once you get it thin then use googone or wd40 with scratch pad, but scratch pad will go through paint so something less abrasive is better but takes longer. Sounds brutal but the 2 part adhesive is a B&@“$ to remove.
The 50/50 is only for double sided adhesive residue. |

Maybe one of those adhesive removal wheels that doesn't burn the paint.

Well I have tried the 50/50, WD40, Goo Gone, & Acetone with no success. I also tried the adhesive removal wheel, like a giant eraser, with no luck.
From the look of it someone must have used a two part adhesive or panel bond. I will try scraping with a razor blade. I'm not worried about the paint the car is being repainted.

No the adhesive isn't hard. It is rubbery.

Maybe try using a heat gun or even a hair dryer. Obviously you don't want to go wild and melt anything but get the adhesive warm enough to remove it with a plastic scraping tool.

try anhydorus methanol 100% no water, straight no water added. its used on the plexiglas adhesive, and will solvate most adhesives.
Methanol is the smallest alcohol molecule will solvate the adhesive better, or it it needs some umphh.. use a blend of d-linonene and methanol. you all know d-linonene as goo-gone, it has the solvency power of acetone, so the alcohol will buffer it a little. personally I'd try 75 methanol 25 goo-gone if methanol doesnt cut it as needed. Important..add minimal water..that really buffers the effect of any solvent. The other caveat? Check the blend on an area out of sight in the trunk first.

Plastic scraper or wooden stir stick. Sharpen with 200 grit sand paper and do small areas. Keep it sharp. I've this wooden stir sticks on aircraft panel adhesive and it worked very well, just kept it razor sharp. Also doesn't damage paint.
