ZL1 aerodymanics--or lack there of!
So, according to my datalogger, my ZLE is only 4 - 5 mph faster at the end of the straight compared to my stock 400hp C5 (2003) Z06. Granted, the C5 had the best coefficient of drag of any vehicle you could buy inn 1997 other than the EV1 electric vehicle. Still, I'm surprised at how slow my ZLE down the straight consider its extra 250 hp.

More like 800lbs. Least that's what my 17 ZL1 is showing compared to my former 04 Z06.

That extreme 1LE aero generates way more downforce and significantly limits top speed, it's about 10 mph less than that of the regular ZL1.

ZLE is all about turning corners, not straight line speed.

How long a straight are we talking here? That makes a big difference. The longer straights favor the ZLE. Shorter straights punish heavier cars. Look at the speed differential at Nürburgring laps between both those cars.
ZLE - 7:16 04 C5Z - 7:56 This time differential was made up on the straights. 40 seconds is an eternity in gap. |

On the nurburgring it’s less an eternity than other track... thé différence between a 2018 GT3 porsche and thé zl1 is about 4’sec. ... it’ is not so far... if you consider what is a gt3
This track is very technical ... Yes there is the weight but there is also a very important wind caught... thé aerodynamic of a C5 is better ...i think that’s what thé différence is |

The ZL1 1LE makes a lot of down force when at speed. So an extra 800 or 900 lbs of down force on top of the extra weight over the C5 Z06. This car doesn't lack aerodynamics, it's got a lot of aerodynamics pushing it down llike it's SUPPOSED to.
That car is made for handle curves better. Not to be a top speed champ. No car with extreme aerodynamic profile ever is. And it's 405 HP, not 400 for the 03 Z06. |

Well that's what the sticker on my 04 said, but the dyno said that little 416 was making 520 at the wheels. After tracking my fat pig that I dearly love, I've told my son who is the proud owner of the 04 Z with a big brake kit, that I might edge him out in the straights, but that thing will late break the snot out of ZEHELL1!
I once thought about racing shifter carts, until I realized the roll bar was my head. The thought of Bouncing around on it at 90mph made the thrill seem much less... |

The aero creates a lot of drag. The rear wing has pushed the trunk down hard enough to scrape the bumper paint. Yes I adjusted the bump stops for the trunk after discovering that, but I couldn't push the wing down hard enough with just arm strength before adjusting.
On the track acceleration to 120mph is pretty linear, then it falls off. Top speed is barely competitive actually on the big straights and it feels like I hit a wall at about 140. But the grip due to the aero in fast turns is freakin' awesome. Its a driver's race with GT3s.

One other point that is a factor is the performance setting you are on affects the amount of power you are getting.

It's basically the NASCAR Camaro design, so it has to be pretty damn good.
