Loud drivetrain clunk,

2SS 1LE and ZL1 Package. The car has a 416 CI, M6, BTR stage III cam for over 400ci. Heads, intake are stock, long tubes and full exhaust and finally a 1 piece DS. (I have no idea what brand the exhaust is, if you do please do tell). Car puts 510/480 to the tire here at a local speed shop in Virginia.

The problem: When driving at 1800rpm through my neighborhood and disengage the clutch going around the corner there is a clunk, again when I engage the clutch. Cold start and leavig there’s another clunk when I engage in R from the driveway, and again when I put it back in first.. If I’m ripping through the gears there’s no clunking. When cruising down the highway if I push the clutch in there is no clunk but if I release the clutch fast there’s a small clunk.

So now that we have the nature of the clunk LOL

I put the car up on the jack stands and turned the driveshaft both ways there is almost an inch of (play) turning travel when turning either a tire or the DS. The video shows everything.

The car is in neutral.
When I turn a rear wheel it should almost immediately move the DS. So I am fairly certain whatever’s wrong is within the rear DIFF.

First video right when I turn the blinker on you hear the clunk and right before the blinker shirts off again.
The middle video just shows there’s no grinding sound but you can hear when it engages the DS each direction.
The last video you can see the driveshaft move up towards the transmission when I turn the wheel so you can see the difference and when it moves and when it doesn’t move.

Has anybody else had this very similar/exact problem? Or similar? There’s no grinding or crunching sounds as of yet. What did you do to fix it?

For what it's worth my modified 2010 SS with 3:91s and the posi mod has been doing that exact thing(the play & clunking when turning a wheel or the driveshaft) for a couple years that I know of. I still take it drag racing every season. Found my issue not from hearing the clunk over my loud exhaust but when trying to locate what seemed like a suspension noise and had it in the air checking things over. GL and hope it's nothing major.

That is a relief!! I was worried for sure as it seemed to be more prominent the last 2 weeks. I am also dealing with som cam irritability and just plain horrible driving manners. I hav a 2500-3100 flat idle cruising bog where it feels like some sort of choke is on over gassing it and it does not clear up untill I give it more gas. Just a frustrating last few weeks but honestly your reply made me feel a ton better! Thanks Bro.
