M shift with an Automatic...

So I got my Camaro about two weeks ago and I have been playing around with it.. I noticed whenever I put it in manual and shift its a little rough...the car has below 300 miles on it... I've driven cars that were automatics that could go into manual but this shifting is just rough...so my question is. Do I need to let off whenever I shift up, or do I just accelerate lightly and shift with the buttons?(the guy at the dealership said I dont have to let off) Also I hate how when I down shift it High revs... Why is that? Example...(I'm driving about 18mph in 2nd about to shift down to 1st..whenever I downshift the rev bounces up like 2k rpm...why is this?) Could someone please fill me in on this? Thanks for reading.

The system needs to learn your "habits". It IS an adaptive system with a separate PCM for the trans.

I personally "drive it like I stole it" so I mostly don't let up when shifting and it shifts fine. Sometimes when just making a casual upshift it will "lunge" a bit but not much. I think this is due to having learned my aggressive habits early on...

Thanks..so its not hurting the tranny by "powershifting" it? Im not really rough with the shifting its just whenever I shift sometimes theres a slight delay.. gonna give me whiplash one day lmao

the shifts are firmer in manual and sport mode then they are in D mode, you don't have to let up to shift, just punch it and let it shift for you. If your car is stock then it's under warranty so I wouldn't worry about it at all, it shouldn't be that agressive of a shift (custom tunes make it far more agressive than stock). If you are going for best time though it will shift better for you in S mode rather than using the buttons for shifting.

I meant when I am using the button shifting the shifting is rough...not when it is in automatic or sports mode..sorry for not posting that first of all

I was actually having really hard downshift frpm 2nd to 1st and brought it into the dealer and I needed a software update for the shift points, now it's smooth like it's supposed to be. Hope that helps.

No way man. It is a feature (more like a curse to me) called TM (Torque Management) that cuts power slightly while it shifts. GM did this to soften the shift and extend trans life.

I am used to a MUCH firmer shift coming out of my RX7 that I had a race rebuild done on the trans, so what may seem mellow to me, may seem harsh to you. Just drive it more and drive it like you want it to behave in the future as it will learn that as a primary habit.

that sounds like normal downshift behavior to me; same as with a manual transmission -- when it hits the lower gear the engine RPM's have to go up to keep up with the car's speed

Plus, 1st gear is a really low gear. I don't shift to it unless I'm stopped or crawling up to a stop. Now there you could do some damage to the clutch pack over repeated uses. Even tho the car has software not to allow a potentially damaging shift it is gonna be harsh and over time I would expect some accelerated wear...

Thanks a lot Chuck. That helped greatly!

I'm at about 1200 miles now and noticed that at first, seems to be a lot better now. I nail it when going through the gears, don't come off the gas during shift.
Things I have noticed:
1) Shift is a little slow for my liking, i.e tap, wait then it shifts. Particularly when downshifting - i.e at 50 MPH in 6th gear, I want to get to 3rd quickly seems to take a bit longer then necessary...
2) when coming to a complete stop I now let it change down for me. When i have downshifted at lower speeds, it has changed into 2nd for me just as i hit the - button so 'lunges' into 1st. Which is no biggie, just leaves darkies on the road when I take off.....
3) I use the - button during declaration, over taking etc. and all is good.

Has anyone changed the shift to be more aggresive? I have a 99 Mustang GT....ok ok....that has, at some point, been tuned for aggressive shifting. When its nailed the transition between gears is almost instant, and noticeably harder
