Brake Replacement questions

So pulling the car out from winter I noticed my front passenger rotor has a chunk of rotor broken near the middle of the rotor. I'm getting mixed signals from people telling me its fine to continue to drive on as long as it doesn't crack to the edges or through, and that its condemned and I should replace both front rotors immediately. Wondering if anyone can help me out with the best route to go, I love the look of the CC rotors but I do not track this car.

Can I get a away with replacing just the one passenger rotor ? If not would going with the girodisc iron rotors be a good solution? Can i leave my rear CC rotors on and replace the fronts with the giros for now or do I need to replace all 4 corners with the girodisc iron rotors at once.

thank you in advance for your guys help I try and attach a photo from my phone to show the damage to the rotor

Yes, absolutely. I would not drive it as it is but changing just one rotor, on what I assume is a low mile car from the pad wear, will be fine. Be sure to buy new caliper bolts and do your homework because they are torque to yield (single use) with a unique torque spec.

For a track car you may wanna go Girodisc - I have had them on both of my Z/28's but they see a LOT of track time.

If you can stand waiting you may want to wait for a "gently used" front pair to pop up for sale. Put them on and save your leftover single as a spare.

What would cause this kind of damage since it's low mileage and not tracked?

I was wondering the same thing? Sucks because it was the one thing I worried about the car when I bought it last year and of course my second year of ownership I got a brake issue

I have a GM tech telling me I can still drive on it because the damage is center rotor and not near the edges? As long as I dont go hard on the brakes should I be ok or should I absolutely not do any driving until its fixed?

Its hard to tell from the pictures, though I am on my phone right now…but where that chip is and the odd looking wear ring (again on my phone, but look like its shaving the rotor quickly) looks to be like somehow it was impacted and then wedged causing the chip and then gouging.

I’m with Marcus on the cause Check out Racing Brake ,ReBrake,Remmen Brake or Sicom for refurbishment of your rotor. These are what I’ve seen on other forums. Don’t know if service still available but worth a shot. Last prices I seen from racing brake was like $600 ea in 2019 but that was based on a group package deal. I’d still check into refurbishing instead of just discarding it. If it were me I’d already have taken that rotor off and removed the hat for a better look. Check into those and let us know what you find out if anything. Good luck gotta start somewhere

Damage most likely caused by a rock kicked up and impacting the rotor.

I'm sorry.
That looks expensive.
I hope it doesn't happen to my car.
