I don't get it... why not some national guard units? Aren't they TRAINED for disaster recovery? As a former Marine, I can tell you what the Marines main mission is: Destroy The Enemy. Babysitting is not our job.

I know that we are trained for quick response and what not, but I feel that using the Marines as a police force is a waste of resources and keeps us from doing what we do best (though of course we hope and pray that it doesn't have to come to that in the first place).

Ok, end rant.

yea i agree. we aren't at war with Haiti. at least it will stop looters and other things when they hear that the Marines are coming :O

I would say cause they expect some trouble that bringing in the big guns might squash right off the bat.

Sure you've seen them mob a food relief truck and just swarm the UN guy and take what they want. Food that could of fed 1000s now feeds a dozen or is sold as folks carry off whole giant bags.

They might still try that on Guardsmen, as they will out number them the same but might think twice before rushing Marines.

Its gonna be a mob soon as no one has food n shelter, the gangs will gather up to claim what ever they want, leaving even more without.

Ahhh ok, I will admit I am unfamiliar with Haiti's history. This makes more sense, and yes, so long as the Marines' reputation precedes them I'm sure they'll think twice before trying anything

I don't think national guard units are trained for disaster relief anymore than other branches of the armed forces, but deploying regular forces to a non-conflict has troublesome legal aspects. I think the rules for Marines are different, which is why they are used as guards at embassies and consulates. Thats what I've heard anyway.

The rules of engagement suck for these peace keeping troops. Not much different than what they'd be in your own neighborhood back home.

Generally speaking, the rules of engagement are "do not fire unless fired upon"

However, if a bunch of thugs show up and tries to steal a truckload of food and they don't shoot, there's almost nothing you can do to stop them. Particularly if they vastly out number you.

As a sidenote, I watched some news and they were showing the Special Forces unit who went in to make the airport functional because the control tower is out. I guess that's the specialty of this unit- they open up forward bases and get the planes moving.

Those guys were impressive as hell. So organized and quick. I have no real point other than to say damn our guys are GOOD.

Haiti has a really sad history, and it's rough under the best of circumstances.

They're sending in the Marines because of a real need to maintain law and order, and because what could happen if they don't.
