C5 members, I need some advice/help

Basically Ive been obsessed with the camaro and these forums for about 6 months now...OBSESSED...

The times here I have my charger sold for 14 thousand(which im going to put down) Im pre-qualified for my Summit White LS. Ive Saved up 5 thousand dollars because Ive been so motivated to get a Camaro. My Car payment will be 180ish insurance 300 a month. I make 1300 dollars a month, no rent, no bills etc.

So my parents have all of a sudden turned against me getting this car:(. They feel I should be happy with my charger, without a car payment, with only having to pay liability insurance. I just don't really know how to approach this any more. They feel I should be focused on college and be saving my money..which i do understand there point in being happy with what I have.
But I am working and going to school full time, which I think is doing pretty good for most 18 yr olds around my town.

"Im gonna piss away my car for 14 thousand like my dad said" when he payed 22 thousand cash for it 3 years ago

I dont think theyre gonna allow my camaro to happen though. I mean im figuring I have 5 thousand in the bank, so I can pay my car payment for the next year + easily so in case I lose my job, I have some leeway. I would only have to come up with 306$ a month for insurance, which is cake.

My parents are going through economic hardships right now(my dads a contractor) So they basically have no job right now. I have offered to help but they do not want to take from me... I know my mom has wanted a camaro since she saw transformers, and figured she would have bumble bee the day it came out. Just like any other car she has wanted. But thats not the way it happened because of the economy. Basically theyre struggling to pay there bills, car payment etc... The vibe I get from them is "theyre thinking what am I gonna think rolling around in a 2010 camaro while theyre struggling from month to month"

Today they compared me to my uncle, he's 28 got his bachelors, works a government job a nice house and is ready to buy a new z06 corvette. He saved his money focused on school, has a secure job and now is ready to buy nice things..problem is I dont want to wait till im 28 to get a Camaro

I do get theyre point, I really do but I dont know how to deal with this, I mean all I think about is my camaro 24/7. I guess everybody has to take the risk... And just knowing it is there in my reach I can get my camaro tomorrow if I wanted too. I know I can be fired from my job anytime, I know the economy is rough and I should be happy I even have a job... I know I have all my life to get a camaro! but why not now??? I only live once and I'll be able to say I was 18 with a 2010 Camaro car of the year.

90% of you guys have a car payment. Most people cant afford to go buy a car cash. Its nice having a pretty nice car payed off, but whats wrong with upgrading to a camaro? Its a risk I know Im only about 5 more thousand away from buying my car cash... but by the time a get 5 more thousand dollars I will only be able to sell my charger for 10 thousand...So its just wasted time to me...

I kinda just want to pull the trigger and get my camaro but I just dont want to start controversy with my parents. I know they care about me and love me very much which is why they payed my charger off for me I was 16 years old with A brand new charger modded out. Having a payment does suck but come on 180$ a month and im working full time with school full time. I feel like if I dont do it now I wont get my camaro for a long time.

I want to thank my mom and dad. appreciate all they have done for me. and if it wasnt for them paying my charger off, I would not even be in position to get a camaro... I know alot most people would think im ungrateful, which I do feel I should not be that way, but im working hard, putting in my 40 hours a week. IDK anymore, im in a bind

I'd like to hear what you guys thing of my "situation"

I think the Charger is still a great car. You might not think it's as good as the Camaro but It's still a unique muscle car, especially with what you've done to it. I say keep your Charger.

wow dude. i feel bad for you. it's hard for me to say man, i'm an outsider looking in so i don't really know what your family dynamics are.

but if you have saved and are willing to pay for your own car and insurance then i would let you do your thing man. i wish you luck, we've all been in that situation where our parents put the cabash on something we want to do.

i wish you luck bro. just talk to your parents and try to get them to see it from your point of view.

good luck bro.

You answered your own question right there...your parents paid...

Earn your money, pay cash for it or at least get the loan in your own name...then you can get whatever you want. No co-signers...

When you have parents help...well, then you didn't do much for yourself if you ask me.

I have a 19 year old, works, college...wanted a new car...I said "no....you have a car, does exactly what I (since I bought it) need it to do in getting you to and from school and to and from work...you want a car, you buy it, you finance it, you pay for the insurance yourself...me, I bought you a car"

Guess your parents and I agree...stay in school and you'll have pelnty of time to get all the things you want!

thanks dude, no reason to feel bad for me, look whats going on with people in Haiti and im worried abut a Camaro... were truly lucky to live in the U.S.A... theres lot of ways to look at it, and after everything its just a car, something to get you from point a-b, theres alot of different ways to think about it dude

totally understand you, Thanks for the help I know thats how most hard working parents will feel. My camaro would be in my own name no cosigners needed.. quick question from another POV for you, since you bought your son his car... do you want it back after hes done using it for college? what if he wanted to sell it to get something else after all its his car. You want him to keep it the rest of his life?

If it's a reasonable price, why not? But 8k?
You got your car for 22k and now you wanna sell it for 14k? You'd be wasting 8k of your parents money.

There will be many things in life you would wish you had, but the reality you have to face is you just can't have all of them.
