Driveshaft Loop Option

Someone was asking about driveshaft loop options and after I looked at what BMR offers for the Gen6 I picked up a Summit drive shaft loop kit for $25. This is not meant to be a critique of my welding or a step by step how to, but just to show you what can be done fairly quickly with a welder, cutoff wheel and hand drill to keep from beating the car to death should the driveshaft let go.

This pic shows what I was originally thinking, but the bottom part of the loop is about 2 inches too long for the exhaust. The kit was not designed for such a narrow tunnel so you have to cut a lot of material off the mounting tab and use what amounts to a small piece of angle iron.

This pic is how I modified it to not hit the exhaust. This actually left enough material from the kit to make another, which I will likely do if I decide to put one in the vert.

I bolted it where the stock carrier bearing goes. Which there were two more bolt holes, but not really concerned.

I forgot how much closer the driveshaft runs to the passenger side, so be sure you take that into account when cutting the tabs. I just centered it and it's much closer to the passenger side.

Nice work… It’s fun to be able to modify and adapt pieces to work to a custom standard…

I purchased a kit for a 5th Gen at one time and then had to modify it when we went big…. This was my first ever attempt to Tig weld, and thank goodness it was steel rather than aluminum… I freely admit after Tig welding steel, I thought I was good to move to aluminum… not so much…. lol…

Essentially what I did was cut the original base, add two strips of like flat material to lengthen it, and then cut and formed the side gussets to strengthen it all…

Nice work. That looks good enough to be somewhere people can see it.

One question: do you still run the stock two piece driveshaft at your power level?

No, I got rid of that 2 piece with the first major upgrade when I moved to 800 RWHP… DSS One Piece Shaft, don’t remember the size… Not long after that, I added a built trans, with a slip fit 1350 yoke output housing, and had Thrash Driveshafts in San Antonio build me a one piece 4” shaft, 1350 yokes front and rear… to go with the DSS pumpkin, Strange Center section and Wavetrac diff… fitted with 3.07 gears…

And that only looks good enough to be seen after the Krinkle black paint job…

Thanks for the info. I'm thinking I need to go to a more local shop and get chromoly unit.

Seems like that is the strongest and a lot less costly than carbon fiber. I also believe they will hold up better over time than carbon fiber. I've just never had an issue with steel driveshafts.

That’s cool…

The 4” shaft Thrash built me was aluminum…

I just went and did a bunch of reading… Interesting comparisons…
