replacing HID headlight bulbs
bought some 6000k HID bulbs for my camaro last week.installed them but i think they are not as good visibilty wise as the stock bulbs, one of which was burnt out.whats a good bulb to install in my 2015 RS for night visibilty as im a geezer and dont see well at night any more.would like same as stock but without spending GM dealer bucks...edit,are these bulbs blue because they are 6000k,so i would need a 3500k bulb to be a yellower light?

Anything from Phillips or Osram should fit the bill. 3500k will be very yellow, something in the 4-5k range will be white, 6k and above are blue.

I've been debating on replacing mine. Are they the same bulbs for all HID? And why does the higher k range increase the bule level?

I just replaced one. Waiting for the other shoe to drop now. I did a 'little' research here and there and decided that if you don't want to do it again next year, and you want OE brightness and color, bite the bullet and spend the $143.10 at Autozone for ONE! Sucks but Sylvania gives a one year warranty. You won't get that from the $32.00 Amazon specials. At least I hope not!
PRO TIP: most videos I watched failed to mention the locking collar around the front of the bulb assembly. You probably just can't twist the square igniter behind the bulb without unlocking the collar. The collar turns counterclockwise to remove and the other way to relock the new bulb.

i believe if you want both lights to be the same color they need to be done at the same time.i do wish i hadnt have cheaped out and got $30 ebay bulbs, its kinda like buying budget brake pads.think im going to get osram bulbs next time which will probably be soon.my night vision is not great and i dont need extra help from cheap bulbs.worse thing is it only took about an hour to do it the first time,i could probably do it easier next time.see post #2,i think he explains the number/color thing pretty well.

The “k” value is a measurement of the color temperature in degrees kelvin, lower is yellow, higher is blue. Not all HID bulbs are the same, but all 5th Gen Camaros use the same type bulb (D3s). The ones from eBay right above are a good choice. Here’s a couple YouTube comparisons that may be helpful as well. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqrKgak6C_g https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2dFzk6Daou0 |

I am using these and have been very happy with the color and clarity. I installed them about 2 years ago and daily drive. Color is just slightly blue when you look at it from outside, but what you see while driving is very white.

Idk about everyone else, but I switched to an LED D1S bulb, with absolutely no issues. I figured the wiring and ballasts (if there were any) were already wired up somewhere within the car, so swapping in weaker energy-drawing bulbs wouldn’t be a huge issue.
I did stick to 6000K, like most people suggested, for the whitest kind of daytime light sort of white shade lighting. I believe the OEM Osram (factory) HID bulbs were also 6000K, but I believe they did have a more blueish shade to them. I also don’t have to wait for 5+ seconds for my HID’s to warm up (not that that’s an issue on cold starts or idling real quick in general), which is also a plus. They definitely don’t draw as much voltage/power (wattage?), so sometimes it helps crank over the engine/battery, esp if I have my auto headlight on default, which has them on most of the time I start it up in my current garage parking. On that note, I converted pretty much every other light bulb to LED’s, except the reverse light bulbs (stuck in the rear bumper fascia), and the 3rd brake light (is it’s own assembly?). |
