Anyone have any experience with exploding 4l80e.
I have been working on my drag and drive camaro for a while now. We have fixed all of the small bugs and finally got it to the track. Had problems with the trans not shifting 1-2 and car would run 2.0 60fts and go 115-120 to the 8th mile. Took the car out the day later to do some street tuning and during the first burnout the transmission literally grenaded. It was a B&M street strip 900 hp rated we were making a little over 1000 and did not launch the car hard. Does anyone have a similar experience.

holy crap. that did a lot of damage. Hope whoever was in the car wasn't injured.
Ive read about t400's exploding when putting in neutral after a pass. And also, at least Rossler recomends to not use 1st when doing burnouts. I am not sure if the same applies to the 4l80 but wouldn't be surprised if it does.

You using a unit rated for 900, most likely that is a flywheel number rating, so like 700-800 wheel hp cars.
Brotha, you packing a built 416 twin turbo with 3 pumps to back it up LOL, the type of unit you are supposed to use is like SFI certified racing bell housing swapped on it and a straight jacket wrap. holy moly thats gnarly!!! |

The first transmission we had from jakes didn't work so we were having that one taken apart and rebuilt with a Reid Super 80 case while this happened. We had bought this trans just to test the car on 10-12 lbs of boost to get the tune right and see if it would shift unlike our Jakes unit. But our boost controller failed so it felt some power
![]() I will be posting updates we are going with a dominator because the wiring inside of the car was melted.

how are you doing burnouts in the 4L80E?
are you going 1-2 and roll out in 2nd? Do you only do first gear burnouts? Th400 and 4L80E transmissions destroy themselves in low gear burnouts. starting in second and get it into third before you let off is the best, 3rd is 1:1 so its the strongest position the transmission is going to be. I only say this because you had an issue with 1-2 shifts and i wonder if you have lower roller clutch in first or damaged the sprag because these are symptoms of low gear burnouts, sure you can do them for a season, then it starts to act funny. |

4l80e Burnout
I figured out starting in 2nd and shifting into 3rd for the wheel speed worked the best. I did try and start a few in first but shifted quickly, that could be part of the problem. I have done maybe 20 burnouts between both of the transmissions.
