First cop stop and no front plate in TEXAS

Well going home yesterday on HWY 377, I got pulled over by a TDPS trooper.
I was probably doing 73 or so in a 65.
Well he ask me if I had been warned of having no front plate. I said no.
I ask if having it on the dash or in the window because I did not want holes in the front of my car, was ok. He said no.
So he gave me a warning for speed and no front, or only one plate.
He did mention that
1: you cant get the plate number if its not on the front.
2: while petting my car, that if a car like this was stolen, I would be yelling at him because he could not find it(lack of front plate)
Just an FYI.

Then you tell him that if your car was stolen, they can call OnStar and have it tracked down to within 3 feet

Not calling you a liar.............. but if its in the front window he can say what ever he wants as long as it is readable it can be up there. That was said to me from a JUDGE in a court over this.
He will get over it and if he gives you a ticket another time just take it in show them where it is and they will dismiss it.
I got one outside of cresson a few months ago for no seat belt and the cop didnt say a thing about my vehicle not having a front plate however I wasnt in a new camaro.

Oh well my parents live in Granbury and I will be cruising down 377 VERY soon in a RALLY YELLOW SS with NO front Plate

Good ol Hood county and the TDPS they are hell.

State law in Texas says that the plate must be located on the furthest most place on the front of the vehicle. That means the bumper. The laying on the windshield thing has never been legal.

I prefer to just pay the tickets, I probably get 1 per year. Consider that $75 an appearance modification, better than having an ugly wart on the nose full time.

Look up proper display of plate laws in your state, it will be that easy.

Even those part way crocked plates in the tailgate of a truck are illegal by law, and the sideways motorcycle plate on the side too.

Whether or not the law is enforced, and whether or not a judge will use modern judgment and let you off doesn’t change the law if they want to push it.

I wouldn't be putting holes in the front of my car either if I lived south of the Red River. It's a stupid law. Me thinks a couple pieces of 3M double sided adhesive tape should work just fine and avoid any holes....

I'm not a cop, lawyer, or a very smart guy... however, the front plate thing has been on my mind since before I got my camaro... there was no way I was gonna be reported to CPS for child abuse(mounting front plate)...

I did find the following from the TXDPS site:

http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/vi/Misc/faq/insp_faq.htm

License Plates
How many license plates am I required to display?
State law requires that you display two (2) license plates, one to the front and one to the rear. Placement or mounting of license plates is not defined.
*This guidance is referenced in TXDOT's requirements to properly display the registration certificate. DPS does not inspect the license plate itself, but instead inspects the license plate lamp.
  • View Transportation Code
View Sec. 502.404. Operation of Vehicle Without License Plate or Registration Insignia
  • View Department Rules/Regulation Inspection criteria
View 04.20.00 Details of Inspection & Search for 20.18 License Plate Lamp

oh yeah... this is Will... i wanted to change my username to match my license plate (only 1)... i transfered my personalized plate over from my old car... this is WLUTHER... im gonna delete my other account in a bit...

Does anyone know if it is legal to make a high quality decal of your plate and just apply that to the bumper? No stealing my idea if it is!

You best make sure what "not defined." means before you shove that in a cops face [ dash-cm uboob vid would be priceless ]

Often that means things can be defined on the spot, knowing their needs to be some desertion or free play in the law to be defined by those who enforce it.

And no cop is gonna say your front windshild is a good place for him to easily see it. A lawyer might get ya off 1 time with no cost if ya play dumb.

A smart man will do as above a few post up, just accept the ticket and pay it, and leave it off. Its not a points issue.

I've been driving for ten years without a license plate...never gotten a ticket for it. The good news is, you can put it on (tape?), take a picture, and the court will dismiss it for a $10.00 fine.
