Mounting a tablet in a 5th gen

Going to do the Big Bend Open Road Race this spring and I need to mount my phone and a tablet in the car. Phone mount is easy, the proclip for the dash. The tablet is the one I can't find a great option for. I'll want it pretty much covering the radio and center AC vents, right below the phone. Phone running the timing app, tablet running the navigation app.

Keep in mind, this is for a sanctioned racing event where my car will have to go thru safety tech. So the mount must be solid, not impeding air bag function, and well secured in order to pass tech.

I have found a theft resistant wall mount for the tablet itself that has a vesa 75mmx75mm interface on the back. Now I just need something solid to mount it to. I'm not keen on drilling holes in any finished surface like the console or dash. I don't think that mounting it to plastic or anything similar would satisfy safety tech anyway. Drilling thru a carpeted area wouldn't be a deal breaker for me though.

After may hours of searching, thinking, and searching some more, I've just about come to the conclusion to custom build a 1" DOM hoop with feet that thru-bolt to each side of the trans tunnel, with a backing plate. It would be bent to fit close to the dash but not actually touch it. I'd pad it for safety as well.

I just wanted to see if anyone else has faced the same dilemma, and if so, what you might have come up with as a solution?

Thanks!

Have you looked into these? When I worked for Magellan 25 yr ago we used something like this to mount GPS Nav display heads. The stalks we used were flexible and once positioned in the desired configuration could be locked down so they became rigid. Not sure this one does that but might give you a start.
