SS rear axle diff: Stock posi LSD for drifting?

I’ve always found that my factory SS rear axle differentials would always slip to one wheel, especially when doing donuts or drifting. Of course, you’d have some not so sharp turns/angles where the LSD powers both wheels and spins them; but more often that not, it seems like it goes into a one-wheel peel…

I’ve had a handful of people with their 5th gen SS’, both manual and automatic, try doing donuts and sliding around with their stock rear ends. Some hold a two-wheel drift for a while, even at sharp angled turns, but it eventually still cuts out to a one-wheel spin. Not sure if it’s just the way the factory LSD isn’t made to have tons of breakaway torque at tighter angles or what, but all the newer RWD muscle car platforms spin both wheels very well with drifting.

Some people in the 5th gen ZL1’s reported the same thing, although I don’t really have much experience with that myself, nor the way that the internals on those stock rear diffs are set up. The 5th gen SS 1LE factory rear diff also seems to do the same thing as I mentioned, when drifting around and sliding th wheels.

I’m only at around 44k miles right now, baby and maintain my current 2SS, and I change the diff oil/fluid about once a year or so. I’ve used the OEM gear oil in the past, both the older part number withOUT the limited slip additive/modifier (is required separately), and also a newer product number with the LSD additive already mixed in the OEM gear oil (although I added some extra modifier).

I originally had the rear diff chattering on turns, and making some minor noises; but after changing the gear oil out like 2-3 times, it went away entirely. I now just stick to Mobil 1 FS 75w-90, with whatever LSD modifier/additive is available to me. I know the factory rear diffs are super picky, so everyone’s experience is different; however, I definitely plan on keeping the gear oil weight at 75w-90, unless I track the car or end up turning it into a full time drift car.
