Exposed splines

For those who have been in working on driveshaft or in the area, I'm wondering. Did you have any exposed splines like in this pic. This is where the two drive shaft pieces come together on the front side of the carrier bearing. Everything seems hooked up ok, but I wasn't really expecting to see exposed splines. Normal? I kind of think it's just a dust cap situation, but I was about to cut out the carrier to install a new JXB unit and a little paranoid of any issue.

Not sure why image isn't coming through. WOrking to fix it now.

Looking around and asking elsewhere, it seems like it's just missing a rubber dust cap.

I pulled mine not too long ago and was surprised not to see a dust cover, because I could swear a few years ago there was an accordion style cover on it. Of course every time I've taken it out, I separated the two halves and don't specifically remember the cover getting in the way. I guess I didn't really help much. Sorry.

All good. I was just a little panicky when I got in there and saw splines not engaged. It's kind of odd. But given how manufacturing goes, I'm willing to bet the same driveshaft is used elsewhere, possibly with a different carrier that uses those splines. In this case, they just cover them up with a dust cap. Though, I don't see why they bother.

Dust cover, Helps keep splines cleaner so they move freely and don't gum up. 2 Piece shaft moves.
