Carbon Fiber Driveshaft EXPLODED!!

Has anyone had this happen. There is less than 5k miles on this driveshaft. I was shifting from 1st into 2nd and BOOM! it exploded.

This is from The Driveshaft Shop. I’m calling them tomorrow, but since it was bought in 2022, I doubt they will help out. This car only goes out once every 4-6 weeks, so it doesn’t get used much. This unit was $1,800 so I would like to think it would hold up much longer than it did.

Man, I hope they help you out. After I purchased their 1200hp axles a few years ago that ended up needing a rebuild, the gave me the run around on a rma for weeks to where I just gave up. Maybe its gotten better but their service side was awful, hopefully they are willing to help you out since those are spendy units that should be pretty indestructible under said rated hp. Good luck.

Companies that give you the run around bank on you giving up. As much of a bitch as it is, stay in the fight. Let them know no you’re not going away.

DSS had historically done pretty good by customers even after warranty expires. Hope they fix your stuff.

Wow - very interesting. If you come with a root cause for the failure I'd love to know. I would like a CF shaft for my car, but I have worries about this very thing.

Their support contacted me and they want better pictures. They won’t replace it, but said they will examine the damage to see how much it will be to repair it. Depending on the price, I may buy a new QA1 or Gulf Coast driveshaft. Driveshaft shop hasn’t made me happy at all in the past. I went through 2 aluminum ones that had such bad vibrations and now their carbon fiber one.

Depending on their “repair” cost, it might be better to switch companies. Next week I will uninstall it and post some updated pictures.

Gulf Coast 100%. Top notch customer service.

DSS has taken care of me before, but normally it involves multiple calls and multiple weeks waiting etc.

Repair it??? I don't think so with that damage. Once CF like that is damaged, a repair of it I think would only lead to another future compromise of the shaft. From what I've read about a CF piece of equipment, it can't be repaired and remain structurely sound, it needs to be replaced.

The exhaust heat might have made it brittle.
I have been running one for a few years now with no issues. My exhaust is heat wrap around the area of the driveshaft.

They probably just reuse the aluminum ends.
Heat plays havoc on some adhesives but I'd be curious if Park brake cables were rubbing..
