Hey...I have a 2010 2SS 6.2 ls3 6spd manual...My rear end is making a whirling sound when accelerating. I had my diff fluid changed and I think it made it worse. What all components will I need to replace? It's like $2k for new...would it be ignorant to look at used? I just dont have the money to throw all new on it. This is my baby..my daily driver..
Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. |

Could be diff, or wheel bearings or even tires. Not much chance that changing the fluid made it worse unless they used the wrong fluid.

Wrong diff fluid? Are you meaning wrong would be anything but GL5 or anything other than the correct AC Delco fluid? I’m going to change mine in my 2013 LS and was going to try something other than AC Delco as long as it is GL5 like Royal Purple or Mobile 1.

Hopefully you got this fixed by now. I just had to have my diff rebuilt because it had leaked almost all of the fluid out and was running dry. There is a TSB about the fluid they used originally destroying the seals, which I think could have happened with mine.

I changed our Camaro rear gear oils out soon after I got both of them home, along with the M6 lube on the ZL1. Went with Mobil 1 front to back on the ZL1 and left the auto trans fluid alone in the SS, but I figured whatever wear-in stuff in the rear and M6 came out with the old fluid. I haven't noticed anything detrimental yet.

2SSMike, I changed the fluid. Used Valvoline 75W-90 Premium Full Synthetic Extended Protection. It didn’t quiet the noise. I do have the original tires - hope it’s just that.

Original tires as in "to you" or OEM original? 12 YO tires is no bueno! If it does turn into a gearset, a ring and pinion set can be had from $237 up (plus bearing and fluid) and it's probably 3-400 for installation.

12 year old tires. Car is generally garage kept, with few miles put on the past years, so I see no cracking. The rear gears were replaced at about 30K miles. When that didn’t resolve the problem, the dealer replaced the housing believing it was warped, and the gears again. All were covered by warranty. Thanks for the info. Good to know.
