Power Management vs. Vehicle Speed with the factory ECM - game changer!
Good morning fellas. Ryan Stevens at GPI has been working tireless on developing unprecedented new functionality on the ECMs associated with Gen 4 LS (and Gen 5 LT) platforms, including the E38 ECM found in our 5th gen Camaros. Perhaps the most valuable new function yet is power management by vehicle speed.
Ryan has harnessed custom User Defined Parameters within HPTuners, which allows for the modification and repurposing of factory tables that are typically unused. In this case, he's created a MPH based modifier that can be applied to the PE/COT Spark Advance Correction table. So, when the car is in power enrichment (heavy to wide open throttle) we can reduce ignition timing based on the vehicle speed - taking out power at the launch, and feeding it back in as power increases. It's important to understand power management is prescriptive, unlike traction control, which is reactive. While a well tuned traction control can help control tire slip, power management is used to delivered measured amounts of power, keeping the tire hooked and accelerating the car at it's limits. This is how most serious drag raced cars operate - they manage timing and boost/ nitrous by modulating those against things like vehicle speed and time to apply the power as quickly as possible without overwhelming the tire. Having this capability on the factory ECM is truly an incredible, powerful tool for anybody that seriously races their car and has more power than they do traction - which depending on the build and surface is quite common. You'll see in the video the difference this can make - taking a setup that has zero ability to hook, and completely calming that down into well-managed power. I'd love to talk more about this stuff with ya'll here on the forum - and if this is something you've got to have for your car, give me a shout directly at andrew@gwatneyperformance.com and we'll get you squared away.
