So this seems crazy.

For the sake of Camaro5 probably best not to reply with legal advice and such. However.

Recently a business owner did some work for me (the business not important but obviously an auto related business) asked me to sign a piece of paper stating I would not post any negative reviews about them. I refused despite a well executed attempt at bullying and slinging bullshit even after I quoted the law. I mean that takes some balls to do that right? As well as seeming shady as fu(k. (Yes, they’ve been reported to the FTC).

Has anyone else experienced this? Just curious.

Don't walk away...run! Anyone who demands you leave a review on their terms isn't worth leaving a review for. That's absurd.

Only way I'd agree to that is if they agree in writing to give me a 2-year full-on $0 deductible warranty on parts and labor for any work they did. So basically, that ain't happening.

Naturally, these are the answers I expected. The dude is risking penalties upwards of $50,000 PER INCIDENT, as well as having to contact every person he ever pulled this on and tell them that “contract” is null and void. This law is spelled out very clear on any website you look at and I double checked with a lawyer pal of mine…he drives a Corvette of course. He also told me there’s not really any flexibility on this. The FTC gets the complaint then refers it to the state’s attorneys office. My mind is blown.

There were a few hiccups, but nothing I’d go all Karen about. My standards are exceptionally high and I own that so I take that into consideration. Also I usually give things a few months before submitting reviews to see if the work holds up.

My biggest thing is I don’t care for writing poor reviews because I hate messing with people’s livelihood, however, there’s definitely a certain line, if crossed, that would warrant a review from the depths of hell.

It seems off but if the work was satisfactory then maybe just explain to them why their approach doesn't sit well with you. I've heard having a rating under 4 basically dismisses most customers from considering a business so I get why they want positive reviews but this isn't the way to do it.

The signing sounds shady but we live in an age where a false, bad review can go viral and wrongfully sink a business. My step son is VP of the development team for an app called Sircles. It was launched to be the "Anti-Yelp." It's a site where you post only people, places and services you like. So you don't have to weed through the disgruntled posters.

I think it would have been ok to ASK you not to post anything negative. As long as he also said, 'until you give me the opportunity to make it right.'
