DSSV replacement

Z28 Owners

I'm looking into replacing my DSSV struts on Z28 not by choice but due to parts being discounted. Looking for insight from the community for those who have been down this road, what replacement brands have you went with. I was looking at KW and it seems it's a 4-6 week wait. Are they the best option?

Detroit speed is a good bet.
Ohlins made a good set but i believe they’ve discontinued as well.
Penske, but not sure if they still make a set. If I had to get something else, i’ll just go with Detroit speed. They’ve been tested on a Z/28 and run well.

Whats wrong with your struts, or are they just worn out from use?

I questioned someone at Multimatic because I had heard the parts were NLA. This was the response from Multimatic;

"Thank you for your email and your interest in Multimatic.

The statement that the z/28 dampers are not rebuildable is true. They are sealed units, not intended to be rebuilt.

However, I know of no reason why they could not be ordered via GM. I just spoke to our manufacturing facility, and we would build and ship to GM CCA (Customer Care and Aftersales, aka GM Service) if they ordered the parts.

We cannot deal directly with consumers; the product must flow through GM.

Please let me know if you (continue to) have specific issues in getting parts through GM. If so, we would be curious to understand what might be happening which would prevent consumers from obtaining service parts."

I’m always looking and may own a Z someday but would definitely want to replace with stock. Would be good to know if GM dealer can still order and owner can purchase. Would be even better if available outside of GM engagement at some point.

If you are looking aftermarket and want to keep the same feel of the car, you might look at Vorshlag. They offer a few different kits using Motion Control Suspension (3 kits with varying prices depending on how much adjustment you want). But what I find interesting about these kits, other than the shocks are rebuildable (so you won't necessarily need new ones in the future), is that they offer matched springs.

I was never able to get a solid answer on spring rates for the Z/28, but from what I can tell its about 400 lb/in in the front and 600 lb/in in the rear. The Vorshlag GT kit has 450 lb/in in the front and 600 lb/in in the rear. That's pretty close, so you should be able to keep the OEM sway bars and get something that's close to the feel of the original car. There's more to a suspension than spring rates, but this is at least one commonality with the OEM setup that makes me think it's worth looking into.

The kits aren't cheap, of course, but the DSSV dampers were about $4000 for the set, so the MCS kits aren't that far off.

The poster above who has noted that you should be able to put an order in through GM is correct. I've heard this before when I looked into getting new struts, but I haven't actually needed them yet. It may just be a matter of finding a dealer with a parts department that actually understands the process for making the special order.
