Question Head Bolt Problem

So, I’ve tried looking this up everywhere. I think I f**ked up. Bad.

The other day, I was trying to bolt something to the engine block. I however, wasn’t paying that much attention and accidentally removed a head bolt. The head bolt I removed was the one closest to the front end for the car on the drivers side. However, after realizing this mistake I didn’t think it was too bad. This is the part where I messed up. I put the bolt back in with a regular wrench not thinking much of it.

I’ve been driving the car for about 500 miles but, I haven’t noticed any leaks and I got a full inspection by my mechanic and he said all my fluids are fine. I’m not driving the car anymore til I get this issue sorted out.

What I need to know though, I’ve seen that you have to replace all the bolts, even if you just remove one. In another post I saw that you need to replace all the bolts plus the head gasket; in the last set of posts I saw that you can get away with only replacing the head bolt that you removed though. I’m wondering what would I have to do in this situation to remedy the problem, would I have to replace all of them, or if I don’t have any leaks would I be able to get away with just replacing the one?

Please let me know how I should proceed, I’m thinking of removing the singular bolt and seeing if there’s any oil mixed with coolant in where it’s at and if there isn’t I’m just gonna replace the bolt.

Thank you!

Replace the bolt with a new one, properly torqued, and see what happens. It's not likely to lead to a catastrophic failure. Keep an eye on coolant levels and for moisture in the oil. If you really want to go the extra mile, have someone do compression and leak down test after the bolt is replaced.

Good sign that you have done 500 miles with no leaks, overheating, or oil/coolant mix, but I’d still stop driving it until it is checked properly. Head bolts are usually torque-to-yield, so reinstalling one with a regular wrench isn’t ideal. Best move is to pull that bolt, inspect the hole/threads, and reinstall it using the factory torque sequence/spec (or have a shop do it), and a quick compression or leak-down test can confirm the head gasket is still sealing fine.
