Virgin 69 Interior
This beauty has been untouched (interior) for 41 years. I found a mint 1969 quarter stuck in the dampening pad in the front passenger floor pan. I guess the worker was too envolved in laying the carpet to notice.
![]() Replacing carpet, sound deadener, trunk divider and rear shelf then restoring door/rear panels and console. I did find excessive glue on driverside floor pan that was 3/4 in thick. Cleaning up pan which has minimal surface rust. Not sure what treatment to coat floor pan before installing pad and carpet. Any suggestions?

Bare floor
Here are shots of the floor pan without sound deadener pads. I need to finish cleaning the fuzz on the passenger side from the old pad. The carpet is scheduled for delivery on Friday the 12th.

Spray it with a product called "Metal Ready" to neutralize the surface rust. Then paint the floors with a product called POR-15. It is a epoxy paint, goes on easy with a typical paint brush. Both products are from the same company.

POR-15
Here are the latest pics of the POR15 epoxy applied to the floor pan and trunk. The dampening pads and carpet are next after I run speaker wires for new 6x9s being installed in rear shelf for upgrade over 1 speaker in dash pathetic sound.
![]() To adhesive or not to adhesive? I was going to spray adhesive to underside of pads to prevent movement but when I was removing old pads I didn't encounter any sticky crap. What have you guys experienced in your cars?

Your POR-15 looks good Wow they have Gray now thats awsome !!!! The stuff I have used was black and it got on me and stuck to me for a few weeks no matter how much I scrubbed.
You did a good job applying it how thick did you apply it ? I'm sure this car wont be out in the rain/Snow anymore so to be honest you are just being cautious with using por-15 which is not a bad thing these cars dont drain like a NEW car. My Carpet is not glued down if you buy a good quality carpet from like year one or Classic industries it sits pretty tight on the floor with no wrinkles or buckles. While you have the carpet out I would lay down a line layer ( padding , sheets or spray which ever one you choose to use all work ) of dynamat sound deadener. If you still want to hear your exhaust use it thin however I wish I had used this plus it protects from the heat/moisture on your floor. Your exhaust will be right under your driver/passenger floor pans so you will hear your exhaust if you go with a louder muffler. I got a Bigblock I hear mine ![]() Good Luck ! |

I would use the POR 15 on the entire floor and all metal, it is a rust inhibitor and will help tremendously. I have had luck with Dynamat, it works great, Very Nice Car.

I've never had carpet movement issues in my 1st gens, don't need adhesive. Just be sure to use OEM type replacement carpet kits, not do-it-yourself non-fitted carpet.

Thanks Jekyll, Dr. Jekel and 9ball for your advice and compliments! I did purchase the preformed carpet from Classic Industries so I will go au naturale and let the door sills and console hold it in place. As for covering all of the metal with POR15, I plan on finishing the job. My daughter came home so I had to take a break.
The pads I'm using are the stock replacements from Classic Industries that are made from the same material as roofing shingles. I decided to just lay them in place except for the 2 under the driver and passenger seats that are prone to movement. I will tack then in place with a little adhesive. Would it be overkill to use Dynamat with the the OEM pads?

Dynamat over Flowmaster
Quote:
I do have Flowmaster 30 series which are loud so I just might go for Dynamat so I can hear my newly installed rear speakers.

If you do use the dynamat and you use the liquid use just a little therefore you can still hear the rumble of the exhaust and hear your stereo.
The paper dynamat works great for speaking elcosurs in the doors but thats about it. |
